Shootout Again! 645D Vs A7R

I think I have been for long not posting shootout test and here it is, for my old cameras! ;-)

Measurbate and discover by yourself, for all the differences! Original photos are available for viewing by clicking the "Download" option per photo under album! :-D

EXIF data is available for all photos. Pairs of test shoots were taken at almost the same time for the same scene.

Lens used for A7R is a Canon EF35mm F2 (AE and AF adapted) and a FA645 45mm F2.8 for the 645D, for almost identical FoV.

Whats up with the lower corners on your A7 shots? Is that the adapter? The Pentax looks weak here, but I blame the lens. Either your FA is not in the greatest of shape (look at the edges) or it is just a poor match for the 645D. The 645D should at least be on par with the A7 and I'm not seeing it here.

That Canon lens actually behaves like that, same even when it is put on my 5D3.

And, the AF accuracy plus consistency of the 645D is not that good, plus the DoF is actually less at the same f-stop for the same FoV. View the second set, the 645D pic should be better.
It is better. Still the canon lens looks like it has better microcontrast and less aberration. What camera did you use to take the picture of the cameras used? :)

The modelling photo was made with a Pentax Q, with fill-in flash. :-)
Wow, I never imagined, that the image quality gap would be so big. We compare a $1000 Pentax lens with a Canon lens of only one third of the price, but the image quality seems reciprocal (the other way round).

Previously I had the cliche in my head, that "pseudo" medium format cams (with only small crop sensors rather than real 645) may have lost their former resolution advantage over FF by now, but still would have expensive premium lenses as a backup to guarantee ulitmate image quality. But the pictures tell, it seems to be the other way round: You cannot escape a rather mediocre quality, due to the lack of better alternatives from other lens makers?

Given this evidence, the days of crop-sensor medium format cameras are probably counted, and already in a relatively short term.

The colour rendition and micro-contrast of the Pentax are better. :-)
Paul, firstly having owned the 645d myself and now the 645z, I can say that it most certainly is up to the A7r, probably better.

Secondly the author must not know much about the Pentax system or he would have known that the FA45 is about the worst lens in the line up that he could have used.

It would have been a much more accurate test with the A or FA 35mm and the Canon 28mm f2.8 IS.

MF days are not numbered as you say.

If he didn't have matching lenses of equal quality then he shouldn't have done the test as it is worthless.
Hear! Hear!
Pentax colors are more pleasant (warmer), but there's definitely better IQ on the Sony. Maybe it's the FA lens fault... Regardless, that A7R sensor is amazing, giving its smaller size.
Yes, the Pentax has a slight greenish cast making the distant blues look warmer and deeper, whereas the Canon/Sony is the opposite with a purple-cool cast. At least on my monitor. The middle in between would have been perfect IMO. But I don't take such color casts too serious when judging lenses, because this could well be caused by whatever color profile the RAW converter is using? Probably these casts could be calibrated away or tweaked to taste with a custom profile ;)
