Yes it is big ...... If resolution 36MP with 300mm was NOT better than K3II 24MP with 200mm (I assume this is the case) I would prefer smaller new K3 body. But may be Pentax/Ricoh will develop a smaller mirrorless FF? They can re-brand the SONY FF's ...... Apologize .... not good of course .... I don't know if they have "smaller plans" ...

I had a look in a camera shop yesterday and held some mirrorless cameras. They create images just as good as DSLRs. Makes me feel that these big bulky cameras are dinosaurs

We've heard it all before. Mirrorless is smoke with no mirrors. All hype.
hype? The photos they produce are real and not just "hype".
I had a pentax k-7, and now I have a sony A7, and in my opinion there is not that much difference in bulk. What would be a game changer is a camera that fits in your pocket, but till that day I don't see much difference for a camera that has to hang from a shoulder... By the way there is no doubt that the A7 is lighter on the shoulder, but it is not a great difference, and it is compensated by the fact that the A7 is more fragile thann my previous pentax. And also the pentax being bigger felt better on my hand!
That is te reason why I love my compact K-01 brick. Small and solid, good image-quality. I mean it seriously.

My five years old K-5 is rather dated and it's time to upgrade to the K-1. ;-)
In the 70 & 80s, the Pentax cameras were standing out for being the smallest of the SLRs.

Yes, but those were the days! :-(
in 2016 Pentax supplies the smallest full frame DSLR in the market.
It was pretty obvious, digital is always bigger than film (due to sensor thickness, circuitry and battery), and full frame is always bigger than apsc! The second place for the biggest pentax camera should be the k20/k10, it would be near impossible to make a full frame smaller than that, at least if you want a K mount reflex!
MZ-D a.k.a. MR-52 was an even bigger K-mount camera ;)

Really? Especially when the vertical trip is mounted, for a like to like comparison.
Comment I've placed before:

Pentax would possibly be well-advised to offer, as a future FF camera, or as an option, a further downsized body "K1 extra small" without SR.

Because:
* the film cameras people (you) are comparing the K1 with did not have SR either,
* all those Canikon customers have to do without SR most of the time, i.e. when they a using a lens that does not have image stabilization.
* with the high ISO capabilities of today, some applications do not need SR.

Without SR, of course, you also lose astrotracer, superresolution and the low-pass filter simulation. Consequently, such a body could do without GPS, possible introducing the pop-up flash again. Also, the back display could be fixed again (as it was on all previous Pentax DSLRs). AFAIK, the K-1 is not particularly high or wide, just very deep compared to a K-5, and therefore such a model could well end up with a form factor close to a K-5. Which would be a major selling point.

I think it might be the heaviest modern DSLR that doesnt have the battery grip built into the body

Not possible and exagerated. Have you seen D800. It is massive!

Heaviest Pentax DSLR, but not heaviest DSLR, IMO.

Nikon D800: 1,000g incl. battery
Nikon D810: 980g incl. battery

Pentax K-1: 1,010g incl. battery
Isn't that an incredible feat by Pentax, taking into account t sturdy back screen mechanism and the builit SR mechanism and autofocus motor, all of which are lacking with the Nikon.
I think Pentax is th most innovative DSLR manufacturer, period. Nikon is sleeping on its success. Mirrorless four'thirds are also innovative but a different market segment IMO.
Much looking forward to my K1!
I read comparison between D810 and K1, I think K1 indeed is a better camera, also better looking, more professional. My only concern is lack of low Aperture telephoto lens(es). May be Ricoh/Pentax can remake them, but I assume not many users are interested (?) also because Nikon/Canon dominates that specific market. And it is disappointing that recent Sigma's Tele's are not K-mount available. Recently I saw pictures (birds) taken with D810 / Sigma Sports 150-600, outstanding! May be when Tamron is ntroducing a new 150-600 (optically equal to Sports 150-600) Ricoh can rebrand it. But may be they won't because of Pentax 150-450. So in my opinion it is a better move to introduce an original Pentax low Aperture telephoto lens (prime).
I like this size. I have opportunity to shot Canon 1D-X with 24-70 - it was so heavy at start. But also very comfortable and stable. When I went back to my K5 I feel sad :(. But ofc during postprocessing I hate "shallow" DR of 1D-X and love it AF reliability.

I am sure Pentax could make a full frame camera as small as my 1977 MX (which is STILL lovely) if all the body did was all my MX body did. Feature creep results in big bodies, and Pentax is trying to make a FF that has all the features people are asking for.
Yes, omit the SR and make the Display detachable (maybe sell is as an option), a the resulting body is probably much smaller and lighter.

Still, this Photographer would like the K1 a it is now.

Make the WiFi work so a phone can be the screen if needed. Otherwise make it purist like the ridiculously overpriced Leica 60.
I shoot 645d, so anything smaller than that is gravy.

The 645 is so big and heavy, which I don't like! ;-)
