IQ K-S1 is very good, for example in combination with SIGMA 500 EX DG or try the 18-55 DA (WR). So what is the problem? However for a fee weeks ago the 1.4 DA converter did not work yet, may be software updates are necessary? May be there is a market, may be Ricoh tries it, wish them luck and let them also produce the needed fullframe.......
Look at this like a K-01 with a viewfinder and some leds. The bodies are pretty similar in shape to the old MZ series. At least that's what they immediately spring to mind. The midnight black one looks pretty good in a weird retro 80s kind of way. The high iso raw shots I've seen from this camera look pretty good. Dxomark claims it is worse than the k-5 on high iso, but from what I've seen this is simply not true. The difference they measured was small at any rate. With limiteds the K-S1 looks pretty nice IMO. Nicer than the ugly K-01. It just looks really awful with the ugly 18-55. Time for a refresh Ricoh! Pentax at the same time makes some of the most beautiful and ugly cameras. That's the way its always been. The PZ-1 was no beauty either.

It's not aimed at you! unless you're under 21

The answer to your question about what Market it's aimed at is in the 20-27th Dec edition of Amateur Photographer magazine. Page 8. "Pentax made clear that it's cameras must appeal to a younger audience, as more people take pictures on their phones. Not enough of them were taking the next step and buying a proper camera." The philosophy came to life in the newly styled 20-million-pixel K-S1 DSLR, which sported a row of flashing LED lights built into its handgrip...

The problem is that adding a couple of LEDs, as useful as they may be (imagine taking a family group photo with the self timer where everyone can see when the photo will be taken! Or being able to see the controls in the dark) won't make it appeal to younger audiences. It is a good looking camera, but with a questionable grip (ergonomics? Hello?). What younger audiences expect is probably more something like great stills AND video, retro looks, good connectivity to their smartphone. Being able to upload photos straight from the camera, or at least send them to the phone for upload. A modern interface. One that is really fast, because their phones are. A camera that you can install apps on. Proper tethered shooting.

--> Something that doesn't just look modern, but actually is.

Compared to my smartphone my K-5 is archaic, and so is the K-S1. The Samsung NX1 is a modern camera.

"Overall, the Pentax K-S1 is a very good DSLR. Its looks may not be to everyone’s taste, and the handgrip may put some off, but I would urge potential buyers to actually get one in their hands and try it out for themselves."
