http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/58-troubleshooting-beginner-help/323158-k1-mode-dial-failure.html

Seems to be a common fault as reported.

Same problem, Mode Dial stays on M Modus. I think this is a software or firmware bug. Since i buy i use only P mode, there was problem with changing Autofocus (SEL) and Whitebalance after 6 weeks (was not possible to change), it pop ups message that this function is not supported in this mode (P). So i try to change Mode and after that camera stays in M mode. Thats it. Camera is now on the way to Pentax. Sorry for my english

Milutin doesn't need any luck. I am 100% sure his problem will be dealt with professionally, i.e. if there is a product fault, it will be repaired. Ricoh/Pentax is a serious company with serious products.

Argh.. PFs. That link has NO description of the problem. It just says mode dial failure. How does it fail? What the issue? More info here than 3 pages of whining over there.

For a rugged field camera, the K-1 mode dial is surprisingly fragile. My mode dial broke after 5 days and I am still waiting for replacement parts after 3 weeks. I wasn't the first to report the problem to the authorise service center. Its a hardware design fault and I guess its a matter of time this issue becomes big.

The M mode is a failsafe mode so that we can continue using the camera. Pentax Hyper Manual is great. Just press the green button, followed by AEL and you can use the e-dials to change the aperture & shutter speed while maintaining exposure.

The top plate and mode dials need to be magnesium alloy in the next edition of the K-1. The dials are beyond plasticky, flimsy at best. I know the top plate and mirror box housing have been made from plastic for the GPS receiver to work, but surely there's another way.

Very minor gripes for what is a great camera. But I'd like to see improvements in the next model.
Mode dial failure for me too after about 700 exposures. Everything seems to work in 'M' only, no matter what the mode dial is set too. I now have a very nice but really expensive 'needle-match' manual camera. That is I had, it's been returned. For the moment, there's no FF Pentax in my arsenal. I am not happy!
Mine just went out, have 3921 picture count. Thank goodness it happened "after" my Alaska trip. Need to call Ricoh tomorrow for repairs. Only works in M mode. Have a K5 for backup.
Same in France! It's my second K1 body with the same fucking problem!!! First one directly had the problem out of the box! Just go back to the store and free exchange it.
So my second K1 body camera work well for about 2000 pictures and the mode dial just bug now!

Really don't understand how it can appears to Pentax. Did they test their new FF camera with more than hundred picture?
Pentax Germany has claimed that the problem was solved in "second generation K-1s", but after numerous emails, including escalated ones to directors, they have not been able to prove that there are second generation K-1s.
