First High ISO Shootout: K-7 Beta Vs K20D

Someone at the largest Chinese photo forum, Xitek Forum, has posted a shootout for the noise comparisons of the higher ISO speeds of the K-7 Beta (firmware version 0.2) against the K20D:-

http://forum.xitek.com/showthread.php?threadid=628798
(Text in Traditional Chinese)

Three pairs of full sized full resolution sample photos at ISO 1600, 2500 and 6400 are posted, EXIF preserved!

It is stated that no Noise Reduction of any kind was applied.

I notice that the K20D photos were converted using the Adobe PS CS3 whilst the K-7 Beta ones are direct in-camera Jpegs, though.

I won't make further comment on the image quality and noise level differences at this moment. You'd better measurebate and judge yourself. Just wish to mind you that the K-7 Beta was still having a beta firmware of verison 0.2, which would just be something that is still not quite mature.

Well, well, well, it seems that pentax still has'nt got the idea to put a nikon D3 in their DSLR's (...if these tests are confirmed). But nevermind, I'm still interested by this machine (the K7). If it's just a k20D+, it's still good enought for me and the price is acceptable.

This was still firmware 0.20. We should still wait and see how things will look with production level firmware (1.0).

I see why they wouldn't release any full sized pics above base iso and small pics only up to iso 800.. here's to hoping the alpha firmware is to blame. Pity that raws from k7 are not supported yet.

With this firmware and settings the K7 have more color noise and softer output. But better shades in K7 samples say to me: easily beat the K20D IQ with an optimized software.

There is no way that the camera is going to look that bad compared to the K20D. I can't read any of the text but the images are rediculus.

Why isn't there any K-7's pics?
I'm not sure the picture is from K-7.

Well they better do some firmware improvements then! Cuz the images taken with the k-20 are better!

What is strange is this though. Why did he shoot a k-100 with the k-20 and the k-20 with the k-7? Why not keep the k-100 in place and switch between k-20 and k-7 to take the pictures?

    I think these are k-20s vs k-100s.

  9. Just because they took the shots at different times and places.

I think this man won't be beta-tester of Pentax anymore.
it's not correct and it's prohibited to put photos from beta-cameras.

The photos from K20D - RAW to jpeg from ACR.
    K-7 is in-camera jpeg with firmware 0.2.

It's wrong to compare such photos.
    Beta-camera never has good-quality sensor.
Beta-testing is testing of body, gears, units, shutter and electronics. NOT FINAL PICTURE.

I know this is still early firmwear. I know it isn't fair to make a definitive comment. But still, the K-7 shots have _horrid_ colour noise. We'll see what happens in due course, but my hopes are not high for the K-7.

It seems unlikely that Pentax would put so much care and effort into the camera build and feature set, to shoot themselves on the image quality. In the next few weeks details about firmware 1.0 will come out. Then we can judge.

    Faaaaaake!
It's so obvious it's not even funny.

I can't beleive, this was even posted

^ Agree to the above. There's no way they would even try to sell a new DSLR with an image quality like that!

  15. Frankly, I feel somehow worried about the maturity of the K-7 at this moment.

The video feature has not yet been implemented for the beta K-7s, and now the high ISO images are not so promising.

I remember that DPR did post several times of those sample photos made with beta Canons and these were actually okay.

As far as the development of a new product is *really* near completion and ready to be put onto the market, its performance and output should be also "ready". I'm afraid in this case it may be not.

    10 iso 800+ pics directly from k7

  17. Wow, really thanks for that and now we have more original samples to inspect! The pics were set with lower sharpness (sharpening), though. Whilst the noise is lowered with a lower sharpness setting, they are still somehow visible in the pics. But then all the shots are at ISO 3200 or 6400, so it would not be any big surprise for seeing obvious noise.
