It really looks like if the Kx and K-01 had a love child....

If they can start this under $550 in basic colors (no lens), under $650 with custom body/grip selection, and it has a mic port, this is a true winner.

If its $800 to start with, it will not sell until a price cut....
BTW - if you can get the grey model with black rubber inserts, and you can change the color of the LED to orange, how killer would old F lenses look on that thing?
Finaly, it's not that bad
Seeing Pentax posting / leaking / deliberately pushing these kinds of product shots viral is making my cry:

"Look at me, I'm really cute, too!" ... (... with a 40mm 'pancake' prime lens)

While that being a very true statement - and I do appreciate the colorful presentation that "spices things up" in this dreadful, boring, depressingly-stale world of mostly grey ("silver-metallic") and black-painted cars (at least here in Germany) - I get annoyed by the underlying message Pentax thereby conveys to us long-time aficionados:

"See, we don't want to get serious!"

Really: Not that they have finally produced a capable tool such as the K-3 they would need to pump out some updated glass, meaning: glass with reliable, fast AF. ...and I'm not talking anything screw-driven - the screw-drive limiteds are more than fine in that regard.

I'm talking DA* lenses and others like the 17-70 with SDM. Again, I'm not whining about their reputation for braking down - I'm talking about speed and accuracy, but more importantly: speed. Fast zooms and constant f/4-zooms are all about convenience and speed of operation. They are really meant for event photography. I can forgive my DA*55 the slowness of finding the correct focus: it is a portrait-lens by design, not really meant for that kind of speed, then - although I only use it for anything BUT portraits, since I'm not really into portraits, at all (but that's just me). Really: had it been out at the time, I'd probably opted for the Da-50/1.8 and been a happy camper. Screw-drive SPEED for the win!

Then again: Keep on showing us "I AM CUTE" product-shots. At least that IS a truth that I can agree on.

However: should any of the other existing DA* lenses exhibit the same slowness: THAT is a deal-breaker.
Photorumors says this is about all we are going to get from Ricoh at Photokina. If they are right about that, then Pentax will be known as the colorful novelty/hipster/toy camera manufacturer. The 645Z will do nothing to erase that perception. It is really sad.

Yes, probably.
It will draw attention to the brand, and that's a good thing. It will get customers, and some of them will grow, and they will already be familiar with Pentax and have Pentax lenses. Then they can move on to better cameras, such as the K-3.

If Pentax were really aiming for the pro market they would fix the bloody video function on the K-3, because it sucks in real life, and photographers who earn a living with it often enough have to shoot video too. That's not a problem with other brands, or the K-5, but it is with every current Pentax. K-500, K-50, K-3.
THAT would be sad news.

You know what they say:

"Different mothers may have raised beautiful children, too."

I'll just have to "vote with my wallet".

You copy, Pentax?
