I wanted to buy a Sigma SD15 but now with the K-s1 i may change my mind...Maybe an SD15 user will come in and post some feedback...

A Sigma SD15 is reported - time and time again - to be a limited, special-purpose tool. You should consider getting one "on the side" when you have some change left over to use freely. Or an SD14, used for even lower cost.

As a first camera I wouldn't necessarily recommend to go there. I will admit that I have been thinking about getting one to play around with it, as well. Intriguing concept, that Foveon sensor. So I guess I know, where you're coming from.

On another note: that shot you like so much is just one thing: "Camera Porn"! So much (man-made) detail in one photo, shot with f/10 -- that's well into diffraction-territory on APS-C! Any wider of an aperture, we would probably notice some lens-defects, any smaller and the detail will deteriorate. One thing is certain: the choice of light and scenery tells us it was taken by a very crafty eye!

Unless you walk everywhere with a carefully-selected 50mm prime (which is a little narrow for many subjects) - preferably early in the day, choosing your subjects wisely - you will probably not capture as much breathtaking detail too often. Doesn't matter really: most good photographs are NOT about maximum detail, anyway.

My whole point being: don't get carry away with fabricated press-shots. YES the detail in that shot is amazing - yet everything in that frame is man-made scenery, devoid of any "chance" for moiree, mostly rectengular lines and repetetive objects and a whole lot of "air". Not a bad shot - by design (and IT plays towards the strengths of an AA-filter-less sensor)!
Well .. let me tell my camera timeline :D

Panasonic LS3 --> Fuji 6500fs --> Nikon D40 --> Pentax K-x --> Pentax K-5 --> sold because i needed money ---> present moment Panasonic LS3 from the atic...
It will come a moment when i will buy a new camera...One thing behind the upgrades was low light and flexibility ...
I loved the combination of K-x and Sigma 17-70 DC OS...The pics were sharper than K-5 + Sigma 17-70...The K-x had issues focusing the Sigma but the K-5 didn't.Also the K-5 was weather sealed..I like low light photo with natural lightning, black and white and outdoor stuff...
I never had fancy primes but the 17-70 DC OS + K-x at f5.6 manual focusing pulled the rabbit for me...From what i read the K-x had a weaker AA filter than the K-5 and this is why was "crispy" (sharper)...Especially in museums with old furniture...I got so much detail and i like it...
Actually by removing the AA filter is more about the lens and not anymore about the sensor...A Sigma 17 - 70 lens can make one happy camper or an old takumar if you really want a prime..

K-x, same sensor as in K10D & K200D - I kind of know that one: CCD with a lot of clarity out-of-cam. great in good light (low iso)

...so you are a camera collector :D
Guess you know what you want, then: Happy hunting!
O.o ... Thx for the information about the sensor but looking on dpreview it says that K10D and K200D have a 10mpix sensor. The k-x is 12mpix sensor..
Sorry for posting some continuous but i have a hard time swolling this line on wikipedia ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_K-x

"The Pentax K-x is a 12.4 megapixel digital single-lens reflex camera, announced on September 16, 2009.[1] Pentax K-x uses an Exmor, Sony-made sensor (different from the back-lit Exmor-R used in other Sony models).[2] In some cases it even approaches the quality produced by full-frame DSLRs like the Nikon D700 and the Canon 5DMkII, both with larger sensors[citation needed]. The Pentax K-x is suitable for low light conditions for both still and video photography.[3][4]"
not surprising: the D700 was 12 million BAYER-pixels, as well and a generation older regarding its manufacturing process. Plus: there have been some major lens-releases for FF in both camps: Nikon AND Canon in order to keep up with all the increased sensor resolution. Whereas most of the Pentax-DA glass seems to hold up well on the concurrent cameras, since it is of similar vintage and quality.

I really think it is a question of how much one can UTILISE the modern sensors with the arsenal of lenses that one has or can afford. The sensors themselves are that good, nowadays!
My bad: I mistook the K-x for its predecessor: "K-m" (EU)/ "K-2000"(US)

you're right: the K-x had a Sony CMOS.

...that tells you how much I care about specific sensors inside my cameras: "not that much". As of 2014: they're all pretty-damn-good ... and they all have been for a while, now! Getting rid of the AA-filter makes kind-of sense, since most lenses limit sharpness going to 20mp and more on APS-C, anyway (thus - in part - taking over the job of an AA-filter). But I digress.

Everything is subjective, alright! For me personally: there is NOTHING about the K-S1 that floats _my_ boat. Maybe yours? Coming from a K20D I would probably upgrade to something with similar or better ergonomics rather than all that fancy-schmanzy (yet ingenious, I'll give them that!) sensor-shift_AA. And here is the catch: the K-3 doesn't offer better ergonomics in my view - and the K-5II (and anything before) is rather faulty when it comes to TTL-shooting.

Waiting for Pentax to come back to form - so I can finally upgrade to a modern-day sensor without compromise. The KS-1 really is just another spec-sheet warrior with no advanced control-ability - at least in my book: unexciting, over-priced, marketing-driven entry-level camera that just happens to be technically a dslr -- but without the necessary usability that make a (d)-SLR a superior, universal tool (in so many ways)!

Let me put it this way: should you never, ever want to shoot in inclement weather, shoot action or events with full-on, FAST manual control: such an entry-level dslr is a GOOD choice for YOU. I only question Pentax' latest effort, since I think a K-30 or K-50 -- K-500 even -- are MUCH more bang-for-the-buck because of their superior controls.

Me though - I want an "allrounder", a reliable tool for still-images. I don not care about video, though! So for _me_ the K-S1 ain’t it. If I need to: my newly-acquired bargain: the Samsung NX20 is capable of "some" video: with rolling-shutter-galore! BUT it is not the tool I want to replace my K20D - it simply cannot do the stuff it can do, not even close!
Gotta wait for a refined K-3 / K-3 successor to get that worthy piece of a tool back that is worth MY MONEY.
K-x 12 MP CMOS. K10D and K200D - 10 MP CCD.
Another interesting thing is that they chose the SMC PENTAX-DA L 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED kit lens to make this shot (with in-body Chromatic Aberration Correction), and that it has been made at ISO 400, and with JPEG sharpness set to 'hard'.

This is very similar to the way an average DSLR user would take pictures.
Your first sample is good but google Maps is better: https://www.google.de/maps/@40.703603,-73.989551,...
Ok no more criticism from me. These pictures convince me the camera delivers. 20 megapixels might be the sweet spot!
