Looks like no matter what serial number you get, there is still a chance to get a camera with a stained sensor. Perhaps the newer cameras starting with 396* will be problem free.

There is one thing I know: as long as the problem with overexposing when bouncing flash isn't fixed I won't buy this camera.

Remember, the sensor is a SONY's manufacturing problem, Pentax is just stuck with Sony's infidelity (as was with Samsung and green lines from their sensor in some early K-7's!). And it will be replaced, if needed. We have 2 in family, 39090xx no problem, 38364xx no problem...Always fun to read from armchair experts.. :o)
So there is still a chance you get a camera with stains. Besides that, it is not clear if the sensor is stained before or after sony delivers the sensors to pentax. Lucky you that you got stain free k-5's, but i am not buying one until I'm sure that I can get one without the risk of buying a lemon.

Perhaps lucky as for no return process. If some of your takes are bugs (macro), you need mostly f16+ for DOF, so it could effect you if the case. But I'm very happy with what K-5 can do.

As for a lemon, that's not the case, because a unit can be easily replaced (in the US). Nobody is stuck with it as if it would be with a car.. We got it from Amazon, since they are very helpful if there is an issue. I had one replacement in past, sent it back, they reimbursed my postage and upgraded the replacement speed of shipping for free. The new and perfect item arrived sooner then the one I shipped back.

There is a word out, Pentax is going through its stock to make sure no more effected cameras are shipped out. Sounds logical, nobody wants returns (customer, retail, manufacture). Good luck with your purchase, whatever it is, if any...
