A slow, mediocre zoom lens! Pentax is good at making something!

Faulty cameras and crappy zooms!

It's a good lens for a kit. At least it has decent build quality, probably contrary to this mean and grumpy poster's camera.

Crappy cameras? Compared to what of yours?
AL II and WR are horrific rendering wise.
Not just the tipical distortion and small aperture.
The contrast is artificial and highly exagerated, and the result is not only annoying and very-very disturbing, but also lacks shadow detail, eaten by the same stupidly exaggerated contrast.

I disagree compared to kit lenses from Canon and Nikon: average construction and good (Nikon) and okay (Canon) image quality.

OK as a kit zoom for the k-5 it is a bit under par (and the sample variation is significant it seems), but assuming it was a 2.8 or faster, distortion-free kit, most people would complain about the price. There are a few zooms priced higher than this kit... along with the k-5. You can't have everything (at least not on the cheap), and the high ISO capabilities of the k-5 will allow you to stop down to f5,6-8 for the time until you get a Limited prime or a more advanced zoom lens.
