AL II and WR are horrific rendering wise. Not just the tipical distortion and small aperture. The contrast is artificial and highly exagerated, and the result is not only annoying and very-very disturbing, but also lacks shadow detail, eaten by the same stupidly exaggerated contrast.
OK as a kit zoom for the k-5 it is a bit under par (and the sample variation is significant it seems), but assuming it was a 2.8 or faster, distortion-free kit, most people would complain about the price. There are a few zooms priced higher than this kit... along with the k-5. You can't have everything (at least not on the cheap), and the high ISO capabilities of the k-5 will allow you to stop down to f5,6-8 for the time until you get a Limited prime or a more advanced zoom lens.
