You would need to have a bottle of electronics contact cleaner to do the job, example products here and here.

Good luck if you are one of those victims whom have suffered from that deteriorating product quality and reliability nowadays! :-(

For the first time in over 25 years I got a camera from Pentax with a flaw. This flaw to be precise. KR, edial. I looked at the photo, above... and decided a few drops of wd-40 were in order. My camera is operating normally now. Will let you know if any adverse effects arise as a result.

no disassembly required, just droped some wd on the wheel itself and spun the wheel a few times to work it in.
WD-40 is both oily and corrosive. It is not recommended to use it for precision electronics device.
oily, yes it is a lubricant, suspended in a solvent. The solvent evaporates nearly instantly, leaving only a light mineral oil behind.
Corrosive? State your source for that please. I'm no rocket scientist, but I do believe the guys who were rocket scientists developed wd-40 as an ANTI-CORROSIVE to protect missile parts from corroding. I believe the solvent is not recommended for use on clear plastics. as it may cloud them before it evaporates. So My reasoning that using wd-40 to displace the other lubricant and clean the electrical contacts is viable, but I won't be able to recommend this (without a do at your own risk disclaimer) until I've had time to asses the results and any negative effects. Thus far all I can say is it appears to have resolved the problem, quickly and easily.
Hi Don - I know this has been over 3 years :) but did the camera hold up ok after the WD40 application
truthfully, I've seen people do more damage to a camera by picking it up after applying bug repellent to themselves.
Deet will eat your cameras plastic. I saw a guy rubbing 98%deet (We lovingly referred to that as "F@3K OFF!" when I used to guide photo tours in the arctic, regular "OFF" to those mosquitos, was like scotch to humans, we know it is bad for us, but we'll drink it anyways)... his hand was coated with black plastic off his expensive Nikon, when he put the camera down... left his finger prints molded right into the camera.
does anyone know if it's difficult to remove all the internal parts after disassembly? was thinking of custom painting my old kx a-la "korejanai robo". not sure if it's worth the trouble though or more importantly, if it risks bricking the camera.

Where do I get a Pentax K5 Motherboard replacement unit?

Pentax or its repair agent.
Often times their devices are in the $20,000 cost range. To locate a certified, insured, rug washing pro, who uses the hot standard water removal procedure, the best procedure out there, go to Carpet Cleaning Adelaide
Thanks too much for the solution. It works perfectly. I used spray electrical contact cleaner. Now my K-100D come back to be a great camera.
