I think there is no harm to go fashion, as long as the product still performs. :-)

for me, fashion implies - often - good taste, not cheap, kitchy, peruvian street sellers pieces of fabric.

Well, I think Hoya has made a right move and (marketing) decision. If not going fashion, what Pentax could actually compete with the big boys, or just even against Oly and Pana, technology wise?
