Why One Would Want Plastic and Rubber for a Camera?

This K-5 was cracked after a crush:-

The new K 30 looks like shockproof, with its plastic/rubber outer shell construction. So, it seems that sometimes plastic and rubber is better than metal, especially consider that the K-5 metal shell seems to be flimsy and not thick enough. This can be seen in the above photo for the wound. Surprisingly, this was exactly my own feeling when I first picked up the K-5 in my hands. In contrast, the Pentax MZ-S film body is a different story (except for the filmsy "data back" of it).

Yikes it's cracked/dented which is odd for mag alloy must be pretty thin
I don't mind plastic it's quite robust and durable (decent plastic)

First of all platic is just plain cheap for the manufacturer, that's the one and only reason for using this material.
You are no engineer and have no idea about plastics, do you?
It would probably surprise you that there are types of plastics that can withstand more then 200°C, are as tough (or tougher than) aluminum, and others are used as implant material because of there superior biochemical properties.
And some of these materials and processing steps are really expensive.
But wait - it's all "cheap", right?
It's funny that some people even defend the use of plastic and they turn it as an advantage. Probably the same kind of people who find AA batteries in DSLRs wonderful. If plastic would be so nice and great, Nikon or Canon would not build their high end gear with a Mg chassis. Have seen a few cracks on Nikon plastic bodies.
It's a camera. Not a ball. It's not supposed to be thrown into the ground. Cars crash, airplanes crash, boats sink.. Shit happens sometimes.

Even rock breaks if one keeps dropping it...Therefore, a hand strap was born, for the clumsy one...

Years ago, my MZ-30 and FA24-90 did not break but just got scratched when it dropped to the hard rock ground from one metre!

Sure, it's also matter of luck how it hits. "Scored" one drop of Vivi 600mm CAT Series 1 long back and nothing happened, besides cracked rear cap what got replaced. But again, that lens could perhaps survive re-entry from space like a shuttle..
