Ad: Ricoh Lens Choices

http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/products/lens_cmp/

So, it is concluded that the kit lens is junk and should be thrown away immediately! Now, it's time to buy the two plastic wonder primes from Ricoh, or the two old DA/DFA lenses that few people remember and buy now. Go, go, go and act fast and you will be redirected to the Japanese online store of Ricoh! :-o At the end of the day, Ricoh must thank me for promoting them for free! Right? ;-p

I thought the kit lens looked pretty good actually. Not a bad add but I think they could of did a better job showing what these lenses are capable of producing especially the macro.

I have that old series DFA 100 macro lens. Not a bad lens but the colour rendition is surely digital with a cooler tone than the old film FA and F 100 macro lenses.
Did you conclude that lens is "rendering surely digital" by comparing it to film output? If so, which film have you used? Or, you believe it is so because the new lens was sharper than the old one?
Or you have used a digital camera in both instances, and forgotten to check the white balance on your digital camera, or maybe the image was not right in focus? In any case, that comment of yours makes no sense, it's a quasi-scientific nonsense, and I think you know that well. You're such an endless source of joy ... lol :)
The colour rendition is surely different, just believe it or not. But I am almost sure that you had never compared just for what you've said, had you?
They probably changed their coatings on the switch to digital lenses for better digital optimization. Just a guess.

The old manual Pentax Lenses have a different look and feel to the Autofocus lenses and the Digital lenses are yet again different. If you do a portrait session with all three types of lenses you will see the skin tones are very different.
Indeed and A series renders somewhat differently than M series. All have SMC though and have similar properties, but I can see color differences between older and newer lenses for sure. The older glass is warmer IMO, so Rice notices that too. I prefer old glass due to the rendition personally. My old tamron 60-300 SP had great colors that were pretty unique to that lens.
I had the old F 100mm macro lens for years using on film cameras with pleasure, but used with digital cameras it had much less contrast. Sold it and bought the Schneider version of the DFA 100mm. No regrets for a second.

Is it just me, or is the photo with the portrait ridiculous? It's totally washed out with the kit lens, but perfect contrast with the prime? Seems misleading to me. With proper exposure on the kit lens, I think it'd be different.

Conspiracy theory indicates that it is surely intentional. Well, if you view these "comparisons" with a more careful mind, even the cats could be different! Wow, what a marketing! :-o And, as I have said, the kit lens is purely junk and can be thrown away! ;-p

Ad is geared to newbies and the utterly clueless, which makes total sense considering how Ricoh has run off so many experienced customers. They know they have to start from scratch with a new generation of suckers.

So, we were the old generation of suckers then! ;-p
Look at those samples of landscape. Do they mean that only 35 2.4 can be used lying on the ground but not the kit zoom? That is a silly way of promoting a lens.

It just reiterates a century old prime lens aphorism, which says the small lens is, well, much smaller and lighter, protrudes less, and because of the fixed focal length, an more optimised optics, it is more likely to be used more imaginatively.
This is actually a well made study case I have't seen on other company's websites. (Leica is an exemption.)

However, I see Rice's audience just repeats same "nay-nay" answers, like a broken record :-)
Buying a APS-C lens is always a bad choice today. :)
To be honest they have to do better but one thing they are doing something and that is better than nothing.
Don't really want to analyse it because it's to stupid.
I agree with rhermans. The comparison put up by Ricoh is lame. "Good" shots can come out of "bad" and "bad" shots can come out of "good" lenses. A lot depends on the photographer and whatever post processing is used. Personally, I like my kit lens. Is it perfect? Of course not. I had to learn its strengths and weaknesses and now I can dance with it. Why tango with a ballerina?
I like the cat and the girl ...
Yes it's an odd way to sell a lens, because in terms of angle of view the 18-55 zoom can mimic the 35mm prime exactly. There's nothing in either box that you couldn't do with the zoom.

But I guess it's hard to sell lenses to beginners - because the size/resolution/colour rendition arguments may not make much sense to them.
The kit lenses are great for folks who buy into the body and who have no lenses at all, especially no knowledge of what they need nor want. The kit lenses are not made for those of us who have a lens set already or know what we need or want. They are good for what they are and for their intended purpose - no more, no less.
