How Choice of Camera Brand Says About You

Read this somehow old article, that is interesting and funny!

http://shutterfinger.typepad.com/shutterfinger/2010/10/what-your-choice-of-camera-says-about-you.html

"Pentax owners

You’re the sort of person who would buy a $1500 DSLR body so your stash of thread-mount, K-mount and M-mount lenses from decades ago (collectively worth $75.00 at a flea market or yard sale) won’t go to waste; either that, or you’ve never heard of a Spotmatic, Pentax LX or Takumar, you just think you look cool sporting a day-glo red camera that takes real pictures. You think people are laughing with you, not at you."

Wow, it is well said, I think! ;-D

I like it. No I don't have a collection of screw/M mount lenses, I came to Pentax after the fact (My system was Minolta from the early 1980's.... MC MD lenses, no auto-focus). But I liked the system, the Limited primes, the K20D, so much I bought them.Today, I like the K5 even more because most of my time I take pictures during hikes and the size of the camera/lens are perfect. No I would not recommend Pentax to friends who know nothing of photography but those who are willing to accept its limits, no problem. I look forward to a full frame system , if only to placate the whiners and give use something to aspire to (but this won't really help the bottom line of Pentax/Ricoh). And camera straps with Dayglo red text beat white or yellow text any day.

In the 80s, I decided for the Canon A-1 for its flexibility. When I finally went shopping for a DSLR a fews years ago, I chose the K20D because it was the only "affordable" dust-/weather-proof system. Neither Nikon nor Canon had something in that price range - theirs were about twice as expensive then. And the other makers (Sony, Fuji, etc.) had nothing sealed yet at all.

And it paid off - I used my K20D with the DA* 16-50/2.8 for several says in the black rock desert, under extreme situations: Temps way over 100 degress fahrenheit in the shade, whereas the camera was sitting in plain sunlight for hours, taking time lapse imgs. There were the typical Burning Man dust storms with visibilities often below 10ft, with super fine dust particles. Yet, both camera and lens made it through it without any damage.

Nowadays, Pentax doesn't stand out so much beyond its competitors any more, but back then, it was the only sensible option.

No name OP sounds like 13 years old digging in a dead uncle's shoe box while letting out a steam of puberty logic. Google would do a better job finding out about desire & reason why some like Pentax or other brands. :o)

Pentax was my bad mistake when I bought my first film SLR camera with KAF-mount. My second bad mistake was buying Pentax DSLR to use my Pentax KAF-mount lens that left from the film photography period. My third bad mistake is that I like my two first mistakes yet. ;)
Unfortunately, today the modern and young ;) Pentax-Ricoh company, makes all possible for my leaving out of my three mistakes, written above, and finding my fourth bad mistake in another camera brand.
Wish my stash of lovely FA limiteds were that cheap. Was crazy enough to get all the MIJ ones.
First was K10, then made another mistake of getting K5II after reading your "belated DPR review".
Darn...now I'm in too deep!

I didn't realize my first mistake was buying a K-1000 in the late 70s until Ricoh put out the light at the end of the tunnel. I've never tried to live above my means, (like buying a Nikon F-3P or 2, then learning PhotoJournalizm) I couldn't even afford a Cannon 5-D when it came out so I bought a Pentax K-10 when it came down in price then (bitten by the ShutterBug once again) I bought the K-20 when it came out. Other than the 50mm f/2.0-K & 50mm f/1.2-A the only Pentax lens I own is the 100mm f/2.8-WR Macro, (I can always change mounts or sell my Zeiss, Schneider, Hartblei lenses) my Sigma lenses where bought right and would sell good if and when I realize Pentax has peaked.
I still think I'm qualified to fit in my prospective category even though my aspirations of going Pro (with a Ricoh/Pentax) are more childlike fantasies than ever!

I believe that Pentax K-1000 was the best camera to learn photography. It was at the bottom of Pentax line - LX was at the top. However, pictures taken with K-1000 would be as good as pictures taken with LX, because both cameras use the same lenses.
I chose Pentax because I was poor and want to get the most. Now, Pentax is not really cheap but is the weakest system ever when compared to the competitors in the camera history. So, I don't and won't recommend Pentax to anyone who is new to photography and gear and want to select one.

My exact same thoughts! So it's officially dead. Your new blog name noted.

Pentax was big name, One of the big five (Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Minolta & Olumpus). Pentax glass is legendary, and Pentax LX, no company, including Pentax (with the exception of Nikon F-3) could match it. I am eagerly waiting for Pentax full frame DSLR
