Pentax Has Been Fallen Out of Top 20 at the Japanese BCN Sales Ranking (at 28 at Best)

See the results of the period from 10-4 to 10-10:-

http://bcnranking.jp/category/subcategory_0008.html
(in Japanese)

As we can see, Nikon, Canon, Sony and Panasonic are all in the Top 10, whilst Oly is still at the beginning of first 20s with their E-PL1 kits, the highest ranked Pentax offer, the K-x White twin lens dual kit arrives near the end of 20s, at 28, together with the 60D body-only offer.

From this trend, I'm afraid if Pentax does not market the K-r and K-5 soonest, they will be in great trouble in sales figures and results in the meantime. Let's see if the market will accept the relatively high prices of the K-r and K-5, or potential K-r buyers would eventually go back to select the K-x, owing to the large price difference and for those moderate differences and minor improvements (except now the K-r uses a Li-ion battery).

Nevertheless, if Hoya fails this time for testing the water, I predict that they will eventually lower the prices of the K-r and K-5. That would not be very far away, possibly. If you have the patient, just wait until the Christmas.

There is No NEX-7 Yet, but Only a Pink Lady!

Okay, time has been up, there is no NEX-7, but a NEX-3/5 firmware update plus a pink coloured version of the NEX-3:-

Let's see how K-r survives in the competition of colouring the cameras! :-o

How a Company Respond Positively to Criticisms..

Just see this latest headline news at the Dpreview.com, Sony has promptly made a major software update to the NEX firmware in respond to the criticisms previously made by the DPR as well as some of the NEX users as well, actually not very long ago.

The positive response to the "negative" comments from the Net Media/"Press" (and from the users as well) of Sony must be praised, which is invaluable and this proactive attitude is the right way of doing business and is the key to be successful in nowadays' keen competition of the market!

Well Done, Sony. Bravo! And, good and useful criticism made by the DPR, too. My thumb up!

Still, I can see endless fanboyism has been in action in the Sonyland. Fanboys of Sony have been jumping on DPR for their "negative" comments given in the NEX review.. Now, I would ask: Who get the benefits at the end as a result of such criticisms? Really plain stupid and childish for their silly acts afterall, I feel obliged to comment!

Just recently, I must recall Sony's official advisory note on the high-fever symptom of their "video" DSLRs, which is another example of a conscientious company that Sony has been! Btw, there are some "solutions" discovered / available on the net already. Just try it out if it works for *your* DSLR(s)! In fact, all DSLRs are suffered from the same problem, more so for the in-body IS/AS/SR bodies - do you think that your Pentax DSLR really be exempted from that problem? Really? Honestly speaking, Canon DSLRs also suffer more or less from the same under the video mode, by not as severe as those body-IS system which also generates *much* heat during operation. To take a worst example, if you still have a K20D or had one and used its Live View more often at just just higher temperature outdoor and for a bit longer, say, 3 to 5 minutes, then you will know it is just worse and you would see the thermometer warning symbol on display followed by cut-off soon! :-o

Now, look back at Pentax and the attitude of that Hoya behind, she is simply unable to respond to over a thousand of Pentaxians who just wished to have a firmware update of the choice of SDM or in-body AF for nearly one year now, as a suggested remedial to the uncured SDM unreliability issue, for such an open petition online. Indeed, everyone knew very well that such a software update is really simple and technically feasible, even for laymen. But, it is just "politically incorrect" in the eyes of the "authority", whom did not really want to think about of the consequences of ignoring their users / avoiding the problem in such a way and how sales are hurt as a result!

Speaking of the wide complaints of using AA batteries and the lack of red dots indication in the Pentax entry level DSLRs, Pentax should have done that back to the introduction of K-m in fall 2008, but unfortunately they didn't, which I did criticise about that AA battery issue since it was announced (actually long before that indeed) and of course I got many attacks back on me by particular "brand defenders" in return. Now after two years, at the fall of 2010, we finally have a new K-r with an "updated power system"! >:-| Then, those defenders suddenly have turned their attitude for praising for such an "improved" Lithium battery solution as a "new" offer and valuable from Pentax! Oh, really? - They should have done that Years Ago!!

New Plans / Roadmaps of Others.. And Pentax?

Samsung have just also released the NX lens roadmap of theirs, see what PhotoRumors.com reports:-

Well, I think this is just a response to Sony for announcing their NEX lens roadmap earlier at the Photokina..

On the other hand, both Canon and Nikon do not have any roadmap, but they do have announcements of bundles of new lenses and pre-announcements on new development!

Okay, let's count how many new Canon lenses Canonians have had for this Photokina: They have Six (6)! And, it was told that two new updated versions of L lenses will come later! As for Nikon, their also had 6 new Nikkors announced, plus a new SB dedicated flash!

In BIG Contrast, Pentax/Hoya have no roadmap published nor there is any response to others, neither to their users! Last time they "updated" the old Pentax Corp. lens roadmap is to delete/cancel plans of those not-yet-released new lens models that had included in the old roadmaps of Pentax! :-o Damn it! >:-[

I do think that the *Pentax* planned/designed DA*30 and the SDM compatible 1.4X Tele-Convertor are just very valuable add-ins to the current DA lens lineup for both of it as they really fit in some important omissions currently.

( Figure Above: Pentax DA 1.4X SDM - The Vapourised Ware! :-[ )

Still, last time, here was a rumour I reported long time ago, already, as time passes by. Well, now time has almost told that I was probably wrong for believing that, and very possibly my hope but maybe actually just imagination would probably never come true! :-(( I must confess for the stupidity of mine for believing that rumour, which seems to be untrue!

So, the hard facts are Hoya cancelled plans on new DA lenses whilst there is no plan nor roadmap for a new lens system, i.e., a revived Full Frame one, as it should be the right thing to do! >:-( Canon, Nikon, Sony and Leica all have that, why Pentax alone need not to do so??!

Each time I see news and the bright future of the others, I feel upset and totally frustrated for how Hoya are now doing this Pentax business. It seems that they are now selling DSLRs and a few body kits and in numerous body colours, which they are just selling their DSLRs in a way like selling P&S DCs and "Prosumers"! I have never seen that they are selling new Pentax stuff as a strong and complete Pentax system as a whole, which should be a growing comprehensive one that will suit different needs of different users and to be updated and competitive up-to-date.. Hoya, you go nowhere! Where are YOU??

To end this Blog entry, the following statement from the Hoya CEO in an interview with the Press back to October 2009 is quoted, "The Pentax imaging/camera division will be resold, though its deficit could turn intto profit" - Mr. Suzuki Hiroshi (鈴木 洋), CEO of Hoya Corp., 6 Oct 2009. Which would just be a good enough explanation of why all those unfortunate and unfavourable things in the Pentaxland are happening.

1,000 Signatures of the Pentax SDM Petition Online!

As I wrote before, if that Pentax SDM online petition reached 1,000 signatures, I would follow to sign.

9 months have elapsed. So, up till now, there are 1001 signatures, including mine.

I do still encourage you, as a Pentaxian, to participate in this Petition, despite that Pentax (actually Hoya) have not yet responded to our Petition. I bet they will never respond, nor to be responsible, till the end of the World, though!

The new DC technology maybe a silent response to the infamous SDM issue, but how about those Pentax users who have already bought the SDM and very "unfortunately" have had their lens(es) dead for once or more? :-o

Even Hoya do have the "guts" to completely ignore all those affected Pentax users and victims, do they really know that sales are hurt just because of such a conjecture of theirs? The whole case and "handling" (nil actually!) is just silly and plain stupid after all! >:-|

Two Major Meanings of Full Frame - Choice of Shallower DoF and Most Optical Quality from (FF) Lenses

A recent discussion at my last Blog entry inspires me to write something more about the topic..

http://ricehigh.blogspot.com/2010/10/a5012-vs-da5514-what-would-you-choose.html#IDComment102987067

As you can see, a 55mm/1.4 lens on APS-C will give the user a 84.4mm equivalent AoV (Angle of View) to Full Frame but only at f/2.15 DoF wise, even when it is wide opened at f/1.4. So, in comparison, if you have one of those excellent previous Pentax 85/1.4 film lenses which is closed down to f/2.2, without any doubt, the optical quality of the image must be higher than that of the 55mm lens that must be wide opened in order to get the *same* shallower DoF. And, if the user just wants even shallower DoF with an APS-C system, he is just helpless!

Furthermore, to use lenses that have a mis-matched image circle is just a waste of the lens and its designed resolution. Unfortunately, this is just the case for many Pentax "DA" lenses that actually have a FF image circle, e.g., the DA*55, DA 40 and 70 Limited etc. With cropped centre of the lens, there is always a "strong" argument that the "sweet spot" of the lens is used. That is true to a certain extent but those people do have forgot another even more important and real point, i.e., the effective resolution of the cropped centre of the lens is decreased considerably!

Just say even the best Leica lens can have a centre resolution of 80 lp/mm at a MTF of 50%, that lens is NOT going to beat a cheap P&S DC which has a really small sensor at 1/2.3" etc. in terms of lp/mm figures! So, you can see how a mis-match image circle will have a real adverse impact on the optical performance and final effective resolution that can be delivered by a lens!

Grass is not always greener at the other sides neither, though. Whilst in Pentaxland there is always the big chaos of lenses with different image circles in the same lineup with the same nomenclature, i.e., the DA "family", quite some users of Canon and Nikon do also have committed the same mistake in matching their lenses with their cropped APS-C bodies. Yes, compatibility and future upgradability is ensured for buying FF lenses to use with their APS-C body but that is not going to help them to have better IQ and more effective resolution than to use lenses with matching image circle than to mis-match, i.e., to put real APS-C lenses on their APS-C bodies rather than to use FF lenses! Say for two real examples according to my real experience: my Canon cheapo EF 50/1.8II performs obviously better on my old 12M 5D resolution wise than it is put on a 550D with 18M of which the 50% higher resolution sensor just won't help. The other example is that when a EF-S 55-250 lens is put on the 550D, the results are not noticeably worse than when I put my EF 70-200L on the same 550D, despite that the L tele-zoom is just four to five times more expensive! It is JUST because it is a FF lens! (No matter how high grade it is..)

So, the above are just the two major points of why Full Frame! Those are actually have being overlooked by many DSLR users. Even now noise has been somehow improved for the late APS-C sensors with new manufacturing and image processing technologies. But the physics is still here and it is always in action - with the same technology, one can get either more resolution and/or lower noise with a Full Frame sensor!

Nevertheless, there are always two sides of anything. If you're shooting macro photos more often for which the shooter always desired more DoF (but not less) and that in particular if you're shooting insects or butterflies etc. which are really small and/or you couldn't come closer and always want longer reach, the APS-C cropped machines are for you! Ditto for bird shooting, which the longer reach is always desired!

So, someone would put case to extremes then. For example, they would say that the Medium Format is better than the FF and that the micro-4/3 does have tighter crop and longer reach than the APS-C. Well, the simple answer to both proposition is Yes but do think more about the other issues and compromises also! And, old wisdom told us that put things to extremes always do no good and generality is hurt! :-o

In fact, there are a lot of "calculations" on the web in comparing APS-C Vs FF, e.g., diffraction limit for maximum resolution, DoF and so on, which I think whilst most of them are correct for the maths, they are not much meaningful in practical sense. These are not going to help one to know about if FF or APS-C will suit him/her better - Only understanding the basic but major differences I've iterated above and then think/check with one's own need(s) should be more helpful and useful!

A 45k-image 3-year Time-lapse Video with the K110D

K-rumors.com has spotted a 3-year-long time-lapse "video" which is composed of 45,000 images taken with a Pentax K110D. The video shows the creativity and also the hard-working as well as the contribution of those building engineers as well as the workers of the construction industry.

3 Years At The Same Place from Ramon on Vimeo.

Btw, that K110D must be a reliable and durable machine. It has been sitting there for 3 years and so many photos have been taken daily in order to complete the task! (Thumb Up!)

Here it is! http://www.pentax.jp/japan/imaging/digital/slr/k-x/ex.html

Everything made clear now? Um.. Frankly, the K-r is just a K-x with a Li-ion battery and a different repackaged outlook! I'm afraid.. :-|

All in all, the only major and significant difference between the K-r and K-x is.. The *Price*!

It's Time to Appreciate Some *Photos*!

Well, I think I have had more than enough gear talk today. It's the time to appreciate some good photos, which I mean, real ones but not photos of charts, brick walls, newspapers, camera gear boxes or even those photos that were taken at the streets just for the sake of measurbation! >:-|

Just come across a post at the Chinese Xitek Forum, they are all taken with a DA16-45 lens on a K-m (which both I also have):-

http://forum.xitek.com/showthread.php?threadid=792935
(in Simplified Chinese)

As Xitek doesn't allow direct linking, I have downloaded those great pictures, re-uploaded them to my Photobucket and have compiled a Slideshow below. Enjoy!

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v313/RiceHigh/Web%20Linking/Xitek/Photos/?albumview=slideshow

Now, I must confess. I ask myself: Why I have never been able to take great photos like those in my life, but only those "snapshots"? :-(( Just see:-
