$800 for an update of the K-x body with no improvement to the sensor? That's expensive.

what's the problem???? Nikon used the same sensor for 2 models at the same time (D90 and D300) Canon now uses the same sensor for 3 models (550D, 60D, 7D). Come on! Stop nagging! The K-r is a model which completes the lags of the K-x. People owning the K-x won't upgrade, but new users has a camera which is competitive to the Canikons of this world. Rice, maybe you change the name of your blog to: The Pentax Nagging Blog?

The K-r has great image quality in a small body, hi-speed, video, many settings.

I really don't expect great enhancements in the sensor line that started with the k-x until the new exmor-R gets into the dslr, and i'm sorry to say that the k-r is a k-x where they've re-added some of the things they left out.

Does that make a the upgrade not worth while. I don't know. What I do notice is the more versions of a brand are available the more serious the brand is looked at. Because they have a beginner, intermediate, prosumer, pro ..., full frame, ... they are better.

So this might be a reason for the camera, and I'm sure there are people who don't want to start with the beginner model because they are smarter, and the next model is something for the future. It's nothing but marketing.

And then is it a bad camera, ... I guess you have to search real far to find a bad camera.

this become so boring
K-r is true SLR photographic tool not like a gadget toy from sony, if You cant see difference than don't buy it but stop criticize what you dont understand, that is something like technofascism in stile ..." i hate You because You are not by what i think is good and correct "...

of course there is the other side of the coin Rice. Price your products too low and people who know nothing in the photo world (read newbies) will suspect something is wrong with your quality because of the price. You know, you-get-what-you-pay-for mentality.

As rhermans already mentioned before, it's difficult to find a "bad" camera in this price range. I don't want to start some technical discussion here as everybody try to find points to argue with. It's up to the user and his/her personal interest which is for me the advantage with the new Pentax as I also could use some standard batteries in case I'm somewhere without a possibility to charge my batteries. The Pentax K-r is for sure not a cheap beginner cam anymore but everybody know that the price will come down within a few months maybe just weeks. I agree that some of the strategy is based on pure marketing but common guys, the whole DSLR world is marketing. Some are a little bit better, some a little bit worse but I'm pretty sure that only a few people who look at the pictures you made can see the small differences.

Nikon or Canon are the market leaders and even if you try to compare them everybody has another meaning and find some weak and strong points, again, it's not technical anymore but soft factors!

I have some Canon's, still have and use some Nikon's but the Pentax K-r is for sure not a bad choice for a beginner who want to start and go for a cam which can be used also for experienced users. There is not right or wrong, the most important thing is to be happy with your cam and to enjoy making pictures... that's all about... if the price is not the main issue and the white color is something which you always wanted, just go for it and enjoy. Life is too short...
K-r have good specifications, and those iso6400 and 3200 samples seems pretty good compared to anything in same or double price limit, also one will get some nice photo tools like af assist led , and this solution with batteries are great, some like LiIon some like AA both get what they like in one camera, also better AF sistem. So this is not toy but real camera and still have optical viewfinder to focus in twilight or with manual lenses.
The K-r RAW samples show much better noise performance than the K-x
In which case, even "IF" it was the same sensor, Pentax would have improved the system so as to squeeze a little more performance where it counts most - IQ

And though you may not appreciate that, try to keep in mind that Pentax remains an "Imaging Company" first and foremost. Which falls right in line with the developments of the K-r over the K-x.

I just hope you're anti-Pentax mind can assimilate so much positive talk in one sitting! :p

Hi,
the pictures copyrighted with "Xebastyan Photography" are originally posted from Me at my blog www.photoblossoms.wordpress.com . There you can also read about the camerasettings used for this pictures and you can see a video called "Pentax K-r Live View AF Test" I have a K-x and i compared image quality compared to K-x. There is little difference although some of you here see a better noise performance. The only difference i figured out is a bit more tonality in colours. .
The K-r has some new cool features like Fine adjusting Autofocussystem, an AF-Lamp, AF Points in Viewfinder and better ergonomics of the body with better build quality. Coming from a K-x i think there is no need to upgrade in terms of image quality for people who know photographing!
And to the "controversial" Mr Rice High, next time please beware of my Copyright term "All my photographs are copyrighted & you can't use them without my permission."
This time it's ok ;)
cheers

K-r seems to have better high iso performance than K-x.
Michael (ricehigh), can you take a deeper look at those samples ?
