Hoya to Seek Digital Camera "Alliance"

See what Reuters report for an interview with Hoya's CEO yesterday:-

http://www.reuters.com/article/technology-media-telco-SP/idUST15448620090818

Quoted:-

"Hoya's Pentax unit posted an operating loss of 11.6 billion yen ($122.3 million) in the year ended March 31, hit by restructuring costs and a sluggish digital camera market."

Yes, US$122.3 Million ($122,300,000), for just One Fiscal Year!

"I'm afraid it will need some sort of alliance with another company in the long term."

So, who will be that "alliance"? Will Hoya simply sell off Pentax to stop bleeding in the end?

"Hoya sold 2.3 million digital cameras last business year. That is less than a 10th of Canon Inc's (7751.T) sales of 25.6 million units in calendar 2008. "

"Hoya's revenues in the business year to next March are likely to exceed 400 billion yen, Suzuki said, compared with a consensus figure from analysts in a Reuters poll of 398 billion yen."

"Shortly after Suzuki's comments, shares in Hoya closed down 1 percent at 2,060 yen, underperforming the benchmark Nikkei average .N225, which gained 0.2 percent."

Hope so, RICE SOMETHING. Better still, I think Pentax should shut down and u go and start bashing Canon or Nikon.
i thought the whole idea of Hoya buying Pentax was to make this alliance they are talking about !
So it means Hoya don't have enough money and technology ? I thought Hoya was a giant ? Or does it means they don't want to invest that much (but why buying it so ?).

I'm afraid it just mean the Hoya-Pentax experience have not worked so well.

Personally i'm a bit sceptic about future alliances because Samsung could need Pentax but i'm not sure they'll want to keep the name, as it seems they see Samsung brand as a global brand, able to compete on all fields, just like Sony, but Samsung has a name don't have enough street cred in photography. Not talking about the fact Samsung or other brand won't want to share Pentax with Hoya !

Other brands like Panasonic or Olympus… i'm not sure it make sense. Olympus is in a similar situation as Pentax, it's like 2 loosers joining in. Panasonic mmhh same problem than Samsung.

Finally : what about LEICA ?
Obviously Hoya cannot continue to absorb the major losses Pentax is suffering.

The question is - will any other company want to risk getting involved with Pentax considering all the design/production problems they continue to experience?
Pentax camera is a small part of Pentax. There is NO distinction in the lossfigure. For all we know Pentax camera only lost a small fraction of this amount. ALL of Pentax had problems.. Just blaming camera is short sighted and looks to be, as usual. Suzuki's scapegoat..
