8th Anniversary of This Blog

Pentax the brand is declining, the Pentax cyberspace as well as the user-base are both shrinking than ever before. In fact, Ricoh does not treasure Pentax the brand in any sense nor they do put something real onto the market. There is not any exciting news nor any new products or real gear tests that worth reporting. The future of Pentax is so dark, frankly. Could this Blog reach ten years and beyond when Pentax the brand still exists or there is yet something Pentax related worth mentioning? I don't know really.. But I am not optimistic afterall! >:(

5 Million Visits to My Blog Today! :-D

As counted by the StatCounter, this milestone has been reached today for the total number of unique visits to my this Blog with their algorithms. Well, Google has counted even more hits which the 5M number was achieved quite some time ago, owing to the fact that Google has less ability to filter out repeated visits by the same visitor within a certain short period of time.

Thank you for your continuous reading and support (for those who really support me from time to time)! :-) Happy or unhappy reading forever! ;-D

Nikon Retro-Style Full Frame DSLR is Coming

See what Nikon Rumors have disclosed:

http://nikonrumors.com/2013/10/20/breaking-new-nikon-full-frame-hybrid-mirrorless-camera-coming-soon.aspx/

With brief rumoured specs as follows:

- Nikon FM2 like design

- Pentaxprism viewfinder

- 16.2MP 36x23,9 full frame sensor (same sensor as the D4's)

- SD memory card

- 2016-pixel RGB image sensor

- 9-cell framing grid display

- 3D color matrix metering II

- Native ISO range: 100-12,800 (incl. ISO 50 and ISO 108,200)

- 5.5 fps for up to 100 shots

- 3.2" LCD screen

- Battery:EN-EL14

- Dimensions: 143.5 x 110 x 66.5mm

- Weight: 765g

- It will come with a new AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G lens

Well, while this must be a really good camera I have to say, I am rather disappointed this idea was not first adopted by Pentax instead, which I made such a proposition back to 2008, for a retro-type DSLR of K1000D.

Reactions of Pentaxians for the Deletion of the "Pentax" Name from Companies!

(Above: A picture drawn by a Pentax user at the Japanese Kakaku Pentax forum, directly linked.)

As we all have learnt, the word "Pentax" will be deleted from all the Ricoh Imaging companies worldwide very soon. Let's see what are the reactions of all we Pentaxians at DPR, PF, Here at my Blog, Kakaku (Japan), Xitek (China), PFC (Taiwan) and DCH (Hong Kong) and etc..

Reactions are overall negative, Pentaxians are feeling worried, insecure, upset, hurt, pissed off, much angered, desperate and whatsoever. Fanboys jumped in between the lines to defend but they help nothing neither and actually it is also clearly shown that they feel rather uneasy themselves. By the way, is our name of the alleged "Pentaxians" still valid?! >:-o

Someone has PSed a Ricoh KR-10 to the following and posted at the Pentax Forums thread above, of which the Rikenon lens is marked as "Revuenon" now, which is quite true for the situation although it is rather sad! What a Revenge it really is! When we look back the history, Ricoh was only a small company who produced their SLRs only under the license of Pentax to allow them to use the K-mount! Btw, just look at the silly lens coating of that Rikenon lens below, which is actually far inferior to the SMC coating of *any* Pentax lens, as it is just so reflective! :-o

After all, this is a marketing nightmare and must be the worst decision made in the whole history of Pentax, since 1919 of the last century, for almost one century ago!

In fact, all those now so-called "Ricoh" Imaging Companies are actually still selling/manufacturing "Pentax" cameras/lenses as the core business - in the meantime! Why deleting the "Pentax" name? What are the real Plan behind Ricoh for what to do next on "Pentax"?? My humble opinion is that should it be better and cleverer to just change the company name to "Ricoh Pentax" from "Pentax Ricoh" if Sovereignty had to be declared! Why the "Pentax" name must be removed and completely be got rid of?!

Friendly Reminder: Backup/Migrate Your Google Reader Subscription Data Now! (If Not Yet..)

The Google Reader will soon disappear and be out of service within two weeks. I have been lazy enough to do my own migration to Feedly just a few minutes ago!

As for how to migrate from Google Reader to Feedly, here is a tutorial:-

http://vandelaydesign.com/blog/tools/feedly/

In short, just download the Feedly plugin for your browser from feedly.com, run it and you will see this starting page:-

Follow the rest of the instructions and your migration will be completed shortly. Actually, the whole process is quick, simple and painless! :-D

Last minute I've checked, I have about 1,000 RSS feed subscribers for my Blog and nearly 3/4 of them are still using Google Reader, see the following summary captured from my FeedBurner:-

So, if you are one of them, act fast, and do the backup now, before it is too late! :-)

Where Came the Countdown?

It was originated from a blog post by the Mr. Blurry Cameraphone-man, whom posted the diagram below at his new Chinese "micro-blog" hosted at the Sina Weibo, a few days ago:-

http://weibo.com/1495193132/zob2Hz9r5

(Update: The above page has been removed.)

So, this is the significant stuff that posted:-

In short, the Japanese words above meant that at 10:00 a.m. on a x7th day (something is to be announced) and that the "secret is highly restricted".

Do note that Mr. Blurry Cameraphone-man is actually the top Chinese Pentax Ricoh official in the mainland China where the headquarters of the company is based at Shanghai, whom I think is indeed 100% authoritative! As such, I firmly believed that this piece of news was really special and the source of information should be very reliable and trustable.

I further read that two posters/followers to his blog responded and suggested that it would be 27th of March and I saw no objection from Mr. Blurry but then he was actually online after that as seen and thus I further assumed that he could silently admit the date.

After all those, I simply decided to set up the counter sooner but not later as I was really much excited and I thought I was confident enough to do so! :-o

Yes, nothing has happened today but we can still wait for the 17th of April to see if something will really be announced by that day.

Still, I think it's yet the big fault of Pentax Ricoh after all! Why? These days we can see worms of hungry and long-awaited Pentaxians who have been so frustrated and have been hoping for something new from Pentax and especially for a Full Frame body that we could get very soon, "finally"! We are all excited! Aren't we? In fact, all the Pentax forums in the Internet have become very hot again (which are all declining since the Photokina of the last year, indeed!) and once again keen discussions were started.

We all have very strong desire with aspiration but why Pentax Ricoh just cannot give us something that we wanted which have been asking for so long?? Why NOT just a bit "earlier" but rather than too laaaaatte??! >:-( Still an APS-C K-5II/s which is based on a 2010 deigned and marketed K-5? Shit and Damn It!!

At the end of the day, I just wonder, what are the management and marketing heads at the PRI HQs are thinking? Do they really want that Pentax the brand to die?! In fact, their management seems to be even worse than the ex-owner of Hoya, whom at least created and marketed something new every year when they steered the ship! >:-|

Copyright Reiteration

I have been noticing that particular people who follow my Blog have been consistently cloning my post contents of the latest and re-posting these, which are actually originated from my Blog, at other Internet places as if they found the contents themselves, *without citing* the original source of the contents, i.e., my Blog! I have commonly seen this happened at the two major Pentax forums from time to time, namely, at the DPR and the PF.

It should be noted that I have been spending numerous hours and am doing my own hard works in the light of finding any Pentax related news and reports as well as writing technical articles that I think should be interested to many Pentaxians. The behaviour of those people who just knew to steal my contents but refused to cite me is really too disgusting enough! >:-(

In this regard, I feel obliged to remind those content thieves that it is strictly prohibited for what they have been doing and it is simply a serious infringement to my own copyrights and I do not want to see such kind of thefts anymore! Still, I opt not to disclose their names and post the links this time but next time I will not hesitate to do it immediately! By then, don't blame me for any name mentioning if it does happen again! :-o

6th Anniversary of My Blog

One more year has elapsed and today is the 6th anniversary of my Blog!

I have been a Pentax user since 1988 and up till now I have been using the Pentax K-mount system for over twenty-four years (before that I was using a Canon). And the amount of time which I have contributed to the Pentax community via my this Blog is only a quarter of my whole time with Pentax.

During these six years, I have seen the rises and falls of some Pentax blogs, which the owners of the blogs have stopped updated theirs for some reasons, no matter how, but a common reason was that they actually switched. Fortunately, I am still here to "serve" the community. I am glad that Pentax is still alive and yet I am supporting the brand as long as Pentax is at least producing something that I am finding them useful and with some values and meanings to me.

As for the "popularity" and amount of traffic to my Blog, this is what the Statcounter shows, for the Yearly roundup:-

So, 2012 is the year with most visits (for more than one million) since the birth and launch of my Blog. I think the above recorded numbers are accurate as the Google data for Blogger generally tallies with the above, but with even a bit more of the traffic counts. I am not completely sure if it is because of that more people are interested in the Pentax gear or that I have gained more and more readership amongst the Pentax community. But from the referral (links) reports that I have been inspecting, I think the latter should be true.

Anyway, I still hope that Pentax will market a FF K-mount DSLR in the next year, which is what I have been waiting for ten years now, since my first *ist D! There is still hope, right? :-)

Prime M Cameras Have Only Electronic SR for Video Recording

Two weeks ago, Blog reader "daedbird" first reported that the video recording quality of his K-01 was greatly degraded when the SR was turned on against off. When the SR was activated, obvious rolling shutter effect was seen.

Yesterday, another Blog reader "kadajawi" has responded and writes that it is all about the electronic SR that is actually adopted for all those Prime M Pentax cameras for the Movie mode, K-30 and K-01 inclusive. On the other hand, the K-5 cameras which have the Prime II processor use the hardware SR, i.e., sensor movement, to compensate for the hand shake during video recording.

To verify this, I have checked the online user manuals of the K-30, K-01, K-5 and the K-5II/s as well. It is found that the SR for Movie is defaulted to On for the K-30 and K-01 whilst for the K-5 and K-5II, it is default to be Off instead. So, the supposition of "kadajawi" seems to be true for that "coincidence". Nonetheless, no Pentax manual has ever told anything about the actual SR method and the working principle of it, which yet looks like top secret of their cameras but which we users should actually know about.

Yes, the electronic SR is noiseless but it sacrifices video quality. The mechanical SR is noisy but this problem can be overcome by mounting an external microphone with a shock mount. So, all in all, this is not a real problem and better sound reception quality is gained with the use of an external microphone (and with stereo sound recording possibility too). In practice, my own experience that is the body sensor SR is very useful for handheld video recording to stabilise the video and this feature is still useful when monopod is used.

After all, I think Pentax should give all the Prime M users an option, in the firmware and user menu, for the choice of the SR method via electronic (software) mean or yet the conventional mechanical one, then that would be the best.

A PF Comparison Quick Review: 650D/T4i Vs D5100 Vs K-30

I don't think this review is detailed enough, nor it it is professionally compiled with a higher standard that most readers nowadays would expect. There is yet no sample picture of any for any of these cameras under review. So, it is not much better than a casual textural review on those public review online sites after all. But as there are not much Pentax reviews out these days, I think I would still report and point to it:-

http://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/pentax-k-30-vs-canon-t4i-vs-nikon-d5100/introduction.html

In particular, there are a few comparison crops in the IQ section of the review, just have a look on these by clicking the larger images if you still want to.

Also, I think now the PF just wants to include referral product links of the other brands like C and N to their sponsors (e.g., B&H) in their website as far as possible since it seems that they could not earn enough money just solely rely on those Pentax gear these days. Well, it is obvious that what they have been doing, for quite some time now.

In fact, more than two years ago, an online marketing rep of B&H contacted me before for suggesting "co-operation" between they and I, i.e., to include product links of theirs in return of something for me. I declined their suggestion and offer as I believe that my website should be purely non-commercial, no matter how.

Besides, at the first glance of the above modelling photo of the PF, it looks quite familiar somehow. Oh, that's actually my usual style of shooting those different camera bodies side by side at my Blog, e.g.:-

Via: Finally, I am Done! :-D

Well, I guess Adam and his guys must also often visit my Blog so that I have brain-washed them somehow!~ Nope? ;-D

The Death of Online Sales of Pentax Lenses!

http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/198534-how-save-around-50-pentax-lenses-us.html

This is what Adam, site master of PF, has declared recently:-

"Apparently, the Pentax pricing restrictions are for online sales only. I've confirmed this personally with B&H, and they've also told me that they are working to stop this madness, as it's virtually halting online lens sales."

Congratulations, Pentax! You've finally been able to do something very successfully, with immediate result and achievement! Yes, almost all the online lens sales have been halted, which I must agree with Adam! But WTF is this about? Why doing so? Why B&H should need to think of how to stop "this madness"and still need to try helping Pentax?!

And, how would and could those Internet gear websites, who earn their payback money by linking to their affiliated online stores (both PF and DPR inclusive), survive when all the online sales activities are halted?? Who will promote that death brand for "free" when there is simply no money to earn, anymore? I'm afraid by that time, I shall be the only person who will yet stay but not any body else! :-o

The Most Wanted K-5 Upgrade Path - More New Info!

During these few days I have noticed at various Pentax forums and blogs worldwide that Pentaxians are thinking of "moving on" especially for many of those existing K-5 users. Most of them are thinking about acquiring the new Nikon D600 "cheap FF" and to jump boat and should wait No Longer! >:-o

No problem! Unlike Ricoh Pentax, I am always giving my audience for what they want and interested, here is the latest official sample gallery of the D600, pictures in full size!

http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d600/sample.htm

The IQ is really impressive. A huge leap from the D700, I would say! The colour accuracy is also the best for what I have ever seen for a Nikon camera, they are more natural but yet rich.

And some latest YouTube videos about the D600, official or not. Enjoy! :-)

Pentax Spain Reveals New Product Photos at FaceBook (Shortly Removed Afterwards)

http://www.facebook.com/pentaxspain
(in Spanish)

(Click to Enlarge for the above Screen Capture; The page and related albums with images have now been all removed.)

I admit that I have been wrong since the above is official! (Update: seems to be early released than allowed!) There is really a K-5II and then a K-5IIs (I said K-5N, K-3 and K-3S). And then there is really a completely re-badged and 90%+ Tamron alike "DA"18-270 (I said DA18-200) and so on, which looks rather ugly IMHO. The new DA560/5.6 and DFA645 90/2.8 are also there (that I am still correct with these). I do like the new look of the new Q, though. For that cheaper price and new colours, I might buy this *toy*. Hope that there is a brand new 1/2.3" sensor inside that could deliver better IQ but I don't expect miracle.

Anyway, for people who sent me the "secret" information these weeks since August, provided that your intention was good from the beginning and from your best knowledge, I still have to say a thank you to you, no matter how accurate or inaccurate your information are! :-) On the other hand, if you are just trying to play hoax, pretend someone and to fool the others, no problem - you have succeeded! But then since the expectation is now set to be too high for what has been widely propagated, bigger disappointment is resulted, undoubtedly! >:-(
