Japanese DSLR/ILDC/DC Market Shares Jan. to Oct. 2011

See what BCN reports: http://www.bcn.co.jp/sys_imgs/co_press/pdf/2011111009583380262.pdf

Via: http://bcnranking.jp/news/1111/111114_21404.html

The above are in Japanese. In short, below are what we've learnt from the report and are concerned about:-

DSLR Brand Share:-
Rank
Brand
Share
1
Canon
43.7%
2
Nikon
41.4%
3Pentax
7.3%
4
Others
7.6%

Total:
100%

So, the good news is that Pentax still survives and yet wins over Sony for their SLT cameras, whom should be the last "major" player in the category. However, the negative fact is that the market share of Pentax is indeed very low, nevertheless.

ILDC (Mirrorless) Brand Share:-

Rank
Brand
Share
1
Olympus
37.1%
2
Panasonic
29.5%
3
Sony
29.3%
4
Others
4.1%

Total:
100%

As for the mirrorless, Olympus is actually still the market leader and that they have been doing very well, as in the past. Not sure about where the company will go in the future after the big historical Japanese financial scandal, though. It's really sad after all, to see such an innovative camera maker and company to be spoiled like this! :-(

Besides, the DC market seems to be more evenly distributed, just see the following results of the Top 3:-

Compact DC Brand Share:-

Rank
Brand
Share
1
Canon
16.6%
2
Sony
15.2%
3
Casio
14.6%
4
Others
53.6%

Total:
100%

seems that Pentax market share seems to increase :)

but with a duopole that have 80% of the market it's hard to go far higher :(

Explore a new market segment and let the duopoly get 100% of the (old) market! ;-)
The first is about to disappear in maximum 5 years.

With the progress in electonic viewfinders and possibly coming PD autofocus in mirrorless it might be quite realistic. If I were Ricoh, I would try to make something like the NEX7 without the bulkiness of the Nex7 lenses - a "mirrorless K-5" perhaps - or even better, a multiformat camera with FF or square sensor and intercahangeable lens mounts - and Ricoh has the technology to do it. Just imagine all the N-ians anc C-nians buying Pentax bodies :-)
I imagine someone in the 90's saying "now with the autofocus cameras and lenses, focus rings will disappear in maximum 5 years"
For an electronic viewfinder to be close, first we need a non-stop free energy power source, then a 8 MP AMOLED micro screen at 120 Hz vertical refresh, tiny - like APS-C or max. FF35, but with a 15 EV dynamic range,

the human eye has the Dynamic Range of 20 Stops but this is *not* available simulatenously. The eye actually adjusts its sensitivity to different lighting conditions (chemical changes in the eye and adjusting the iris) and can only see 6.5 Stops simulataneously
