Interesting AF Performance Tests and Comparison: K-5 Vs K-7 Vs D7000 Vs D60

In summary, the first test is about a boy running at 5km/hr towards the camera and the photo was taken when the boy was at 5 metres away and the distance of travel of the boy was measured for when the shot was finally made. So, the smaller the figure, the better that it would be. The lens used was with a 135 film equivalent focal of 80mm, at a f/2.8 aperture.

The second test is about a car running at 50km/h, 50 metres away. Then the camera was put into AF-C and continuous frame mode, the number of shots taken were counted as well as the number of successful shots are remarked. In addition, the distances at which the shots were made are told.

Do note for both tests, a green mark indicates a successful shot with good enough focus, whilst a yellow one is a marginal case and finally red represents failed ones which are out-of-focus.

The source of the tests is from a French site called Fnac, which is actually a French famous electronic & cultural stuff store, as told by the original poster.

Last but not least, here is a nice summary of the comparison results by him for the second car test, quoted:-

K5 :
16 shots : 14 okay, 1 tolerable, 1 failed

K7 : 8 shots : 6 okay, 2 failed

D7000 : 16 shots : 15 okay, 1 tolerable

D60 : 16 shots : 14 okay, 1 tolerable, 1 failed

Looks like finally Pentax is together with the rest of the gang in AF performance. Well, its just one test. But the difference from the K-7 is obvious.
need to specify what lenses were used, as those act as variables in this type of tests

If I'm not mistaken, the caption at the bottom of each diagram does tell you the lens, but I suppose it is missing some details. I forgot most of my French but I know for sure "avec" means "with" ;)
Again a result in line with the other ones. The K5 and D7000 are coming real close. There are probably a lot of other differences what will make these camera's different but I guess that AF en Sensor will not be the ones that make the difference.

For me this is again another reason to upgrade, I didn't go for the k7 because I didn't see any (positive) difference in the quality the samsung sensor was generating between the k20d and K7, although the AF was already better that wasn't a big enough reason. Now the AF is again better, the sensor (propably sony exmor) gives stunning results.

I just hope they will start producing a wider (and cheaper) range of lenses now with stellar quality.

But do bear in mind that both the D7000 and 60D are selling cheaper than the K-5. They are not of the same grade price-wise, the true comparison should be along with the 7D and D300s, to be fair.
RH - I know, and if I didn't have some great lenses the choice wouldn't be so difficult.
I only don't consider the 60D after the appearance of the 7D knowing that I would want to have the 7D anyway.

One thing that I noticed is that the canon has the most consistent fire rate, the D7000 misses the second shot but then is taken pictures at a consistent timing , while the k5 has a bit more timing differences. So the canon still seems to be the best (imho),

It is very good all in all, the system is responsive, I have done some test shooting from car in 50 kmh, an got good results. K5 AF is nothing which disturbs me in every day usage, the system works as intended and is enough wide, also cross sensors are now redundantly sensitive now and it is fast. In Kx,k20 it looked like the job is done sequentally. So 5 point to Pentax and also 5 point to Nikon, only 2 points to Canon to destroy D40/50 concept. And -1 points to Canon that they focus too much on video not photography. It is my personal view and to my mind Canon sensors are not state of the art just now. But best thing in the game is competition, I keep fingers crossed to Sigma SD1 as well, seminconductor tech has evolver a lot and this time they may succeed - then we have lot of options to chose from. Nikon,Canon, Pentax,Sigma,Sony All of them have professional and prosumer advantages and that is much better situation than 3 years ago.
It would indeed be interesting to see the 7D and even a full fledged pro body (1Ds, D3s), in the mix as well.

Also, my K-5 arrived yesterday. Very impressive in many ways. And photographing at ISO 51200 is just insane. 51200.. I wonder how long the ISO-performance will be pushed within the next 4 years (The K10D, my first DSLR, was released in 2006, and it had a max ISO of 1600). It will be interesting.
