Pentax K-5 Firmware 1.01 (w/ Hacks! And Upcoming New 645D Software for Tethering Support)

http://www.pentax.jp/english/support/digital/k-5_s.html

Changes to V1.01
  • Increases the number of continuous shot at RAW format and High sensitivity shooting.

    * Ex. Setting condition: RAW/ISO100, Increases the number of continuous shot from maximum approx. 8 frames to approx. 20 frames.

  • Improved stability for general performance such as exposure range on HyP mode

Besides, Pentax also hints that tethering option will be added to their application software later, at least for the 645D:-

http://www.pentax.jp/english/imaging/digital/medium/645d/feature_6.html

Quoted, "A remote-access application will soon to be added to this software, allowing you to control your PC from a distance using the 645D."

Updated:-

Thanks much to Zebooka for his first reply comment to this post, we have the following hacking information of the new K-5 firmware! Quoted:-

Interesting things as quoted:

1) MODSET.505

2) Interesting parameters for SYSPARAM.TXT file:

2.a) Noise reductions: FORCENR, DISABLENR, DISABLE_HW_DPC, DISABLE_EX_DPC, DISABLE_BLACK_DPC, FORCE_LEXP_DPC, FORCE_EX_DPC, FORCE_HW_DPC, DISABLE_ALL_NR

(DPC == Dark Pixel Current?)

2.b) DISABLE_BULB_ALG == Disable Bulb Algorith? Forced noise reduction?

2.c) ENABLE_ROLLING_CAPTURE, ENABLE_ROLLING_STILL == Electronic shutter ???

2.d) DISABLE_V_SHADING_CORR, DISABLE_H_SHADING_CORR, ENABLE_SUPER_HIGH_ISO_NR, ENABLE_DARK_FRAME_TV_RATIO == Those are tricks to foll DxO and show less noise ??? :)

2.e) DISABLE_BAYER_ALL_FILTER == woo hooo! It's a BW camera :)

2.f) ENABLE_SR_TRIGGER_26KHZ == Very interesting. Is it a Shutter Blur bugfix option? (to ommit data about 26KHz fluctuations from SR)

3) Face Detection Library is same as in K-7 1.10 == v.1.2.118.4, Copyright (c) 2005-2009 by FotoNation. All rights reserved.

Enjoy! Happy Hacking! But mind you that YOU DO EVERYTHING AT YOUR OWN RISK! :-D

2d: there is no such trickery. It is sometimes hard to accpect, but technology does improve over time, sometimes by small steps, sometimes by little longer ones - this time the read noise is significantly lower than in the previous genertation. It is good to remember that the whole parallel ADC idea of the Sony CMOS sensors is still rather new, and likely a major source for the improvement.

2e: finally a firmware version where the little people inside the camera will more the filter away and back :)

Anyhow, interesting parameters. Did you decode the firmware yourself or was this from somewhere in the interwebs?
I've just decrypted in with tool from Pentax-Hack.info and looked then in hex code.

No disassembling, just pure reading.

Also I've found the IDEA for to find XXX in MODSET.XXX - search for "NOWAIT" string. There you will find firmware filenames and among them will be this number in one of the names:

C:KB505.BIN C:KB505C.BIN C:KB505B.BIN C:FWDC209D.BIN C:FWDC209C.BIN C:FWDC209B.BIN C:NOWAIT C:KBCHG.BIN
Really interesting insider info! Thanks, Zebooka!

I guess you've got these at a Russian hacker site, right? :-) (If yes, please point us to the source link. Or, you simply a hacker yourself?! ;->)
As I've said in reply to Anu I've just used tool from pentax-hack.info to decode firmware and then looked into decoded file with HEX viewer. Nothing hard, no disassembling or hacking :)
Everything more complicated than getting a proper auto exposure in out of camera JPEGs is complicated for Rice...:P
someone know how to enter in K-5 debug mode?

Use the MODSET.505 file and follow my K-x instructions.
thanks tried it out but it doesnt works someone else dad tried it and it works?
Try to hold some buttons (Menu, Av+-or some other) during power-on.

Try also opening card door.

PS: Maybe file is named NOT modset as it's name seems to be variable now. But extension is 505 definitely
still not working, wath other name can it be
MODSET.505 doesn't work for me too...I know the procedure since I got into K-X and K20D before. Has Pentax changed something this time ?
After re-reading and re-reading the pentax 645D statement, I'm afraid that this doesn't hint towards tethering at all. While it would be perfectly reasonable that 'control your pc from remote using the 645D' is just a typo/translation error, aren't they talking about the wrong software? The remark is about the "Pentax Digital Camera Utility", while the tethering software should be the "Pentax Remote Assistant Software". I think that they are really going to add exactly that, a way to control the Digital Camera Utility from your camera. (In another forum, someone reported that Pentax Germany _explicitly_ said that there would be no tethering for K-7, K-5 and 645D because of technical reasons)
I've posted a video on my blog now doing the upgrade from firmware 1.00 to 1.01 :) Works like a charm!
