Sony (3.1 billion $ loss/2011),
Oly (33 billion yen loss/2011 ),
nikon (0.1 billion $ /2011)..
a lot of japanese companies have very hard times actually.
If ricoh had some kind of production based in thailand like sony or Nikon, it's easy to explain for the last year.
I don't say that to exonerate Ricoh, just to remind than it's a common crysis for hardware companies.

"The majority of the company's revenue comes from products, solutions and services that improve the interaction between people and information. Ricoh also produces award-winning digital cameras and specialized industrial products. It is known for the quality of its technology, the exceptional standard of its customer service and sustainability initiatives."
Also:
"West Caldwell, NJ, April 27, 2012 - Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced that Martin Brodigan has been named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Ricoh Americas Corporation effective May 1, 2012. Brodigan will succeed Kevin Togashi, who is taking on a new role within Ricoh Group in Japan."
Maybe the US portion of Ricoh is doing well and they are bringing in the former USA head to right the ship at Corporate in Japan.
Pentax is really the only interface Ricoh has with the average consumer. I think the acquisition is a signal that they want more presence in the consumer space.
