My Pardon? What? Pentax finally willing to adopt a Lithium battery in their entry level DSLR?! Big and great news!? Pentax has finally made this BIG achievement Only After Seven Years of prolonged pain of all those pathetic Pentax AA DSLR users! Yes, for Seven Years!! In fact, many of us have been complaining the problem during this lengthy time, since the first *ist D. I just wish to ask that How Many of those unsatisfied users and customers have gone during this prolonged period just because of this annoying but long-lasting issue? Do note that not so many of those Pentaxians are as loyal as me and still stick to the brand while suffering! :-o (Stupid Me! >:-(( )

Besides, the K-r uses the same old Sony 12.4M CMOS sensor that the K-x has. So, there is no incentive for K-x users to "upgrade"!

Moreover, the K-r is actually somehow bigger than the K-x and is a little bit heavier without battery.

Next, the new DA(L) 35 is slow, with a maximum aperture of 2.4 only. It is all plastic construction including the mount and there is no focus/distance scale and no Quick Shift Focus neither. Frankly, the lens conforms 100% to the DAL and kit lenses' Specifications and should have been called/named a DAL instead of a DA! It is not particularly small nor super lightweight (something similar to the old A50/2 or the FA43/1.9 etc.). In fact, Samsung and Panasonic's similar offerings (i.e., NX 30mm and m4/3 20mm pancakes) are just smaller and lighter. Furthermore, there is no information for whether this new lens would have 135 Full Frame coverage or NOT, as it is just a DA lens afterall! The final thing is that it is not particularly cheap in the competition. Even when it is compared to the FA 35/2 sold in the old days, when Hoya had not crazily increased the prices of the current not-yet-discontinued Pentax lenses, the FA 35/2 was indeed not much more expensive!

Moreover, the claimed "natural perspective similar to that of the naked eye" is a LIE. How is a lens with an effective 135 film focal of 54mm could be described like this? Pentax marketed and described the FA 43 Limited in exact wording back to 1999. So, which one is true? >:-|

Last but not least, the previously rumoured DAL 18-125/3.5-5.6 has not yet appeared in today's announcements. Why? Just because the rumour was false, or, the announcement is postponed?

As for the new Optios, I have no interest in these. So, just forget about them!

Well, you may have a different view than mine.. No problem, here is a new poll I have just created. Just vote and we will know about how people and Pentaxians think/react:-

What Do You Think about Pentax' Announcements Today (Sept 9)?

Disappointed !!

Anyway, the next Pentax announcement will be on September 20, let's wait and see again! :-)

Update: 1001 Noisy Cameras have compiled a nice summary on the K-r previews and netsphere reactions, go check it:-

Besides, there are 12 colours to be chosen from for the new DAL prime, here is a screen capture from a Japanese online shop, whom accepts back orders now:-

The street price is not cheap, though, in 24,800 Japanese Yen, which is nearly $300 US Dollars! :-o

I believe it's DA 35mm f/2.4 AL, not DAL 35mm. Very different things!

Can we do a poll about what we think about your rant?

I like the new screen and higher FPS, but no manual video mode and no microphone in? Or am I wrong?

Actually, I've used a Pentax DS since it was released and I've not had any problems with rechargable AA batteries. I've also acquired a D and battery grip and still no problems. You just need to make sure that you take some charged spare batteries with you. If you are carrying a flash one should have spare batteries any way. I presume the same would apply to Pentax's non AA batteried cameras (K10D, K20D, K-7). Always carry spare batteries. At least with AAs, in a pinch you can always buy a set from a shop.

Continuous shooting • Hi speed: 6fps - 25 JPEG, 12 RAW • Lo speed: 2 fps - until card is full or 36 RAW, ---- Pretty impressive for this class of camera, but with K-x in bag and skipped k-7, the K-5 sounds like my kind of "horse" while hoping for DA* 10-16mm or close....

Tried 2 Sigmas 8-16mm, but both had *random dark spots in blue sky* on different bodies issues (besides no FL at under 10mm even though Pentax goes down to 8mm). No other lens ever produced that for me, from old k-mount only to new DA. Not bad WA, but not good enough...

Does anyone know the different between Safox 8+ on K7 and Safox 9 on 645D and this upcoming K-r?

Another BIG plus for the k-r, it has the new 645D SAFOX IX AF system!!!
The news of K-r spec is like a final call from Pentax trying to stop me from buying Sony a33.... Assuming the the upgraded SAFOX IX is on par with a33's AF, but I guess I could still go ahead... (I was prompted to buy NEX-3, but the lens size is still about the same of DSLR kit lens with very little option to expand. a33 is much better in thise case, I think can even use my Pentax mount Metz flash in A mode )

Very impressive Job by Pentax with this entry level camera.
the new camera looks hot...Nice stuff here..should shut people's mouths for a few months till something else they can spend their money on comes out. Both camera's sound impressive and the k5 sound like the camera that will make everyone happy for once. Good AF, good speed, high iso.
Noooooo!!!! It does not come with a built FM radio!!!!

Oh come on Rice, how about waiting at least for sample photos before bitching about the hardware? I am a regular reader here I and I read about you writing it's about 'it's the IQ after all'. If this took FF quality pics, would you be complaining?

Still using a DS and yes I'm excited.
Sorry to say but this looks to much like the k-x to be a higher camera, it's more a k-x upgrade.
But that was the K7 compared to the k20 to. (all right it has better af, better menus, sleeker look but the results are the same)
Still like my pentax k20 a lot and I still hope that the k5 will bring something unexpected but ... we'll see.

"Moreover, the K-r is actually somehow bigger than the K-x and is a little bit heavier without battery."

Who cares ? Is there anyone here who uses cameras without batteries ??

I've read the comments and clearly the majority of you are Pentax fanboys or amateurs. So why don't you get your green camera, put a pink lens on and go shoot some VIDEOS? hahaha

RiceHigh, in your voting machine I would add 3rd button: NEUTRAL...I cannot say I am disappointed nor excited, just neutral.

Rice,

I have been more patient than you. But if a new mid/top-range DSLR is not released by photokina, I will most probably say goodbye to Pentax and move to Nikon D7000...

But K 5??
what happened to?
will be announced? Or it was a fake?

Good and solid upgrade of K-m/K-x/K200D and old 6 MP cameras.
11 AF points with LED, double system of batteries, AF assist lamp, 6 FPS with 12 RAW or 2 with 36 RAW (!!!), 3" LCD with 921 000, AF Fine Adjustment ±10 steps (but not for 20 lenses), a lot of new JPEG and movie features. It's rather good upgrade. Better plastic, by the way.
Very GOOD AF (not lower than K-7) and rather fast AF in LV.

DA35/2.4 has the same specs as FA35/2 had....It's interesting. But a bit slower.

Please don't take it too close, but from your posts you look more like apple fanboy, who judge things by advertisings, marketing hype and numbers in specs, without actual understanding what those letters and numbers mean. Of course it is easy to blame someone for something in your personal blog. But if you blame some right things without proofs it only certifies your incompetency. For travelling photographer AA powered equipment is one of top priorities, almost right after weather-sealing , as it allows you exchange power source between your camera, radios, flashlight, etc. Where are you going to stick those proprietary Li-Ions when you out of power in your radio at above 5000 meters? Btw good AA rechargeables are more stable in extreme conditions, for example at -10C Li-Ions dies times faster, even without being used. And if you understand only numbers, did you mention that K-r for example rated 470 shots on custom Li-Ion and 1000 shots on set of AA lithium batteries?

K-r offers better AF and speed and buffer modes than 1 year old TOP-camera from Pentax.
It's VERY COOL!!!!

I'm mad as hell today. The K-r is a waste of resources, it's basically the K-x re-done. They got rid of the silver lining (because they knew the silver lining around the cam was fading or coming off for some users). Additionally, they put a lithium-ion battery (damn, about time). Other than that, who cares if it has the extra 2 fps over the K-x. It's not worth the upgrade whatsoever. Pentax HQ in Colorado released a vid last night, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaD3E2FtkJo ---- and they didn't approve my comment because I stated how the upgrade is not worth it. RiceHigh, at least you agree with me that there is no incentive to "upgrade". Furthermore, the price is high for what it is. I laughed out loud when they said it would only feature the same censor as the K-x, I thought they'd at least feature a 14 megapixel. :-S I'm disappointed in Pentax today. One last thing, they're additional new "toys" are a joke :-S argh....

I'm really disappointed in the new 35mm. While f/2.4 might be fine on a sensor with a wide ISO range, it just does not match up to the competition. I've been okay with slower-than-competition DA limited primes because of their unique focal lengths, but with 35mm, I'm really disappointed. After all, Pentax had f/2.0 in K, M, A, and FA line of the lenses. I don't know why they couldn't do the same with the DA line. Perhaps not to hurt the street price of the FA35? Who knows?
