My K-x' Time Longevity on AF Accuracy

Almost one year ago, I bought my K-x. The first unit of mine was replaced owing to some problems, one of which was the obvious back focusing with the fast Pentax primes, including both the FA 43 and FA 31. Eventually, I got my another K-x unit only in another month, as the Blue Navy K-x was out of stock shortly (and so quickly) within the first week after the goods had arrived in Hong Kong.

Now, yet after another ten months or so, I discovered that my K-x, which *had* perfect focus *before* with my primes, say the FA 43 for example, *now* has significant back focus with the *same* lens and under perfect lighting condition, e.g., on a bright sunny day outdoor! :-(

What? You may ask my Pardon!? Yes, the AF accuracy of my K-x has disappeared and now focus has drifted backwards considerably after 10 months and several days!! :-o

Last week, when I first just shot outdoor for some portraitures on a clear bright day, when I got back to home, I found that most of my photos were out-of-focus when using larger apertures with two fast primes I used, namely, my FA 43 Limited and the DFA 100/2.8. I then decided to re-measurbate my K-x again. Yes, now it requires a +120 um adjustment into it (via the Debug mode, Tutorial Here) before everything can work back normally and as accurate as before!

Yet the luckier thing out of this most "unfortunate" case of mine is that the +120 um setting cures the back focusing problem for both my 43 and 100 prime, at least for close to middle distance objects (whilst for infinity and distant objects now my K-x will cause slight front focusing after the adjustment! >:-|)

Besides, I often said that if you want to confirm with the AF accuracy of your bod(ies), you should shoot real-life targets with a flat surface and with some good contrasty patterns on them but should be with irregular patterns. But, if you just wish to check for the amount of Back/Front Focusing more promptly on a "quick glance", then there is the 45 degree test chart and method outthere. Amongst all of the variants, I recommend to read this article and use this chart, by Bob Atkins, which I believe is also the originally created chart of this method.

On the other hand, the most widely spread "Nikon D70" test chart (I suppose) is not recommended by me as I found that its target line for doing the AF is just a bit thicker than ideal and thus may cause some errors, for either slight FF or BF, depending on the software algorithm of the AF system:-

But afterall, what really puzzles me much in my this real case and experience is that I've lost almost the last bit of my confidence on the brand Pentax as the products they created are just without any durability and time longevity, even if they *did* work on the Day One! >:-\

another good, fairly unemotional and objective post Rice. you're on a roll today.
Please read carefully the following newsletter article by Zeiss. It's very interesting!! http://www.zeiss.de/C12567A8003B8B6F/EmbedTitelIn... (englisch) http://www.zeiss.de/C12567A8003B8B6F/EmbedTitelIn... (german)

Especially lenses with wide open aperture (1.4 - 1.7) have a significant other focus point as on F4. And this depends on the spectrum of light. So you have by cold winter-daylight a different spectrum than by light bulb.

Maybe it's really a problem by your camera or your lenses. But please check your results considering all optical/physical facts.

Not a new problem, I'm not defending Pentax or anything but even during the film era with manual focus, I do send my cameras and lens once a year for CLA, the usual stuff, metering, timer and focusssing. Did this with my Contax, Yashica and Pentax cameras.

I personally don't think its a problem, I just consider it part of normal servicing. I think its good if we send our cameras for servicing once a while. After all, even for bikes or cars, you don't expect after having driven 100k miles through mud, rain, sunny weather to have it work perfectly right.

Just send it for servicing.

Every family has a black sheep ;)
Some device will working a whole life and some will not.
I've nearly every DA lens and no problems over several years. Maybe your camera bag was falling down by your girl friend or somebody else ^^ And you didn't know it :D Nobody knows...
Photography with K-x means not to work with a laser-adjusted device. It's a hobby camera for people who didn't work so exactly or didn't want to spend so much money. I like your blog really (!!!) and your regularly postings, but please work with your Canon 5D if you want such perfect photos!

Focusing Follies
check this article from TOP. It is mentioned that even a day of taking photos may affect the focus accuracy

Weirdness. I must be the luckiest camera equipment buyer ever (still :P). My K10D was flawless, the K-x was, and still is (I sold the K10D, unfortunatelly), and the K-5 is working as promised. My SDM-lenses work as they should, and my Sigma lenses are working as they should as well.

What I believe is actually going on is that things are being blown out of proportion.

Better use Live View and LCD monitor for AF accuracy corection, here is writen how to do: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/...
Please don't use a focus chart. Use the moire interference test. It's more consistent, easier, and does not depend on ambient lighting.

I have a K-x with 2 lenses. The one from the kit and i bought a Sigma 17 - 70 2.8 - 4 SDM OS.I jumped from Nikon D40 to K-x and i could say that the images weren't so sharp as on Nikon. They felt blurred.Even when doing macro.I thought buying the new lens would solve the problem but still something was wrong so after i read around about front and backfocusing and done the modifications in Debug mode now things are way better.I made -30um.
I have some sort of bug.I want anyone with K-x to confirm it.After doing some settings very often i end up couldn't select from Infor menu some items. (Digital filters, HDR, SR system). And yesterday i couldn't select 2.8 aperture even if my lens was setted at wide open 17mm.In both cases a reset to defaults fixed the problems.THe max in this case was 3.2 for some reason.
Regarding the non selectable items.First i thought the problem is related to Shadow Correction and Dynamic range that are checked. But deactivating them will keep above 3 options Greyed out and cannot be selected..I tried varios settings to eliminate this mater and i couldn't find it by now..
I have firmware 1.01 installed. The Debug menu STILL works on 1.01 with normal procedure.

This may sound a dumb question so please forgive me, how can you tell if a lens is back or front focusing, all I know is my pictures are not as sharp as I would like (K-X and 55-300}
