Nikon 50/1.4D Vs Zeiss 50/1.4ZE Shootout on Canon 5D3

Test Conditions: f/1.4 to f/11 in one f-stop stepping; Manual focus to Infinity according to focus indication in-body, until the green dot is lit up permanently. Photos were taken at closest time as possible and for the same scene. The weather was good but it was a bit hazy, though. Camera was mounted on tripod and was fired using 2-sec self-timer. Of course, all image settings were kept the same. Besides, no protective filter was put on either lens for the test.

All the test pictures are uploaded and posted in the following album:-

Original full-size pictures are available for download per picture page. So, go measurebate yourself for what all the differences! As usual, you are encouraged to share your views for what you find!

In my experience the EF 50 1.4 USM is really poor in terms of sharpness compared to the Nikkor AF-S 50 1.4 G.
Canon might have good bodies, but their affortable prime lenses are not. Well, I don't know their new, overpriced IS primes and L stuff, but I won't but it anyway.

One of the two lenses under test is a NIKON!
I think, the Zeiss is better (lower right corner), I need to look at the pictures again...
Could you please borrow a EF 50 1.4 USM and Sigma 50 1.4 EX DG HSM and do the test again ?
I tried both before. I don't like Sigma's colour rendition and the EF50/1.4 whilst is sharp enough, its micro-contrast is not as good as the Zeiss and it does even not come close enough.
Next time I may test the cheapo Canon 50/1.8II Vs my Pentax SMC-A 50/2, on the 5D3.
The SMC-A 50/2 is not all that great. The A 50/1.7 is much sharper IMO. The M50/1.4 is pretty darned good too. You should test the pentax glass though. A lot of those old pentax lenses are quite sharp.

For a realy good test, Try the original macro Pentax 50mm 2.8 (the one with the receding front elememnt) against the F/FA 50mm f1.7 and a Sigma 50mm f2.8 Macro.
