After five years of shooting with EOS 30D I have bought K-5 with three Sigma zoom lenses (I'm sorry, but I see no Pentax zooms to buy, the only must have item is 31mm, but too pricey) and plan to use this set with previously purchased Nokton 58mm at least next five years. I am happy enough at the moment (K-5 has some great features but some drawbacks too), but I prefer to have a possibility to choose between K-mount DSLRs in 2017. I am not crazy about FF and prefer a perfect APS-C for $1000 instead of simplified FF for $2000.

My K100D easily beaten the 30D for a side-by-side usage and comparison back to 2006, in terms of colour reproduction and IQ! :-o

The Nokton 58/1.4 is not suitable to be used on the K-5. Last time I wanna to buy it and checked it at the shop, all the photos at larger apertures were out of focus. There is no way for fine focus adjustment neither, as it is recognised as an "A" lens by the camera! So, my recommendation is just forget about it!
I haven't any problem with Nokton at 30D (even without focus confirmation), but not tried at K-5 yet. I hope at least manual focus will be presice.
You have to try DA* 50-135mm/F2.8, and give us your comment about that. Don't know what your photography style, but 43mm/F1.9 is perfect for me, and wish to have 77mm/F1.8.
I've read, this is a quite impressive lens, but 50-135mm starts from $1100, while Sigma 70-200mm without OS was as cheap as $600. It's a kind of irony, to buy Pentax and to use third party lenses, but the price difference was too much. And I can use this lens with future FF DSLR… if we will see, of cource.

I also need a 30-35mm prime, and the only lenses I like are Noktons 35mm for Leica (both 1.2 and 1.4) and Pentax 31mm. Still waiting rebates or other occasions.

I miss one option: "Keep all my great Pentax gear and continue to produce great pictures!" That has my vote.

Option 1 is ok, but a little pathetic on the support part. Pentax is not a stupid company, although RH thinks the contrary.
Option 2:is ok, except for the waiting part. I don't intend to wait ( on what/who), but I continue to make great pictures.
Option 3 is not ok, since it puts the stress on investing and not on making great pictures (with any camera of any brand).
Option 4 is not ok, since you won't produce any better pictures with a new camera.

My four options have covered already for all possible scenarios, you can still take pictures in any of these four cases and whatever. What you've mentioned is completely irrelevant, I'm afraid.

No, it is not irrelevant. It is what photography is about. You present the case as if you're stuck with Pentax equipment, but what really matters, call it irrelevant if you like, is that you can still make great pictures, even when you have no 35mm format sensor in your camera. And acting like you have been mistreated by the Pentax people for not providing you with a 35mm format sensor in a Pentax camera is a bit childish. And since you are a grown up man, you should know how to cope with disappointments.
For the rest you are right: if the public wants a certain camera from Pentax, they at least should do their best to provide one. That is what Canon, Nikon and Sony (and Leica) are practising all the time, with their "cheap" FF camera's.
I chose option 2 just because I'm satisfied with what I have. Should I lose some equipment, I'd probably buy the same, except for K-5II instead of K-5.
I choose option 2 too and learn how to make great photos with my gears.

My option is: x Buy a K-5 at a great price now.
Still using an older camera, I waited for what the Photokina might bring, but Pentax didn't bring any thing better (in relation to its price) than a K-5.
To be honest, I'm also thinking if I shouldn't rather buy either Fuji's X-E1 or Sony's NEX-6. They seem promising (unless their actual dedicated lens choice)

Get K-01 for backup and video camera than go out and shoot.

As an amateur, digital FF system costs too much for me anyway. And the reason I choose Pentax system is because they have a lot of great lens at modest prices, not too mention the much better ergonomics of the camera bodies (especially the UI) compared to other system.

If I want FF then I just simply switch to my K1000.
My option: Concentrate on taking better pictures with the fantastic equipment that I already have rather than fixating/obsessing about the lack of a FF Pentax DSLR.

All of us here have equipment that is somewhat overkill to take a good picture. APS-C has never stopped me from taking good pictures. Hell, the greatest photographers in the world had much simpler gear yet fantastic imagination and creativity. Also, behind each picture they took, there was an intent, there was purpose. The gear we have these days is unbelievably advanced compared to anything they could have dreamed of. RiceHigh, take it easy on yourself. Stop thinking about Pentax FF DSLR for a week and see what you can do with all that worry-free time and with what you already have. Do you really think that a Pentax FF DSLR would change the quality of your life as a photographer that much? You are not disappointed because of what Pentax did (or did not). You are disappointed because of your own expectations. Let go of your expectations for some time and let the photographer inside you breathe and express himself. You'll be much happier.
I have to say that I am starting to lose faith just a bit. The next 6 months will make up my mind for me.

Short term. Going with a K5 - old version. I want to like the K-30 but lack of battery grip is a deal breaker for me.

What I want to see from Pentax:

Something that signals they are continuing development of NEW cameras. I accept that the K-5II/IIs is a placeholder. The K-30 is a start but I dislike the obvious crippling (audio in, HDMI out, battery grip). Pentax needs to demonstrate that developing new equipment is still a priority in the post Ricoh days.

Continued lens development with REASONABLE pricing. Lens pricing is just confusing and insulting. The Yen rate and desire to move back into B&M stores dont explain almost doubling the price of the 50-135. And since I havent seen ANY move to actually go into B&M or any rebates promised to make up for the increase, the BS flag is waving pretty hard.

Some kind of modernization of the flash system. At this point I would be happy if they would just free up the hot shoe to fire above 1/180 and let me use my manual strobes to the fullest. Pentax is stuck in the film days with their strobes. Junk the whole thing and pay a licensing fee to Nikon.

Im not hard over on a FF being the answer to all problems but I now think that we are moving to a future when APS-C is no more. I can see Nikon and Canon getting FF bodies down to the $1000 range in 3-4 years. At that point they might build one or two APS-C models to bridge past consumers while they phase out "crop sensor" lenses while offering bundles that essentially give away the FF body with a FF lens. If Pentax doesnt get a FF within a year they are going to be APS-C forever. Normally I would think that is a place they could occupy and win but they will be relying on Sony for sensors and if Sony decides its no longer profitable to make APS-C, Pentax is sunk.

In any case, I will NOT sell my pentax equipment no matter what. Worse case I buy the last K-? and use it as a backup after transitioning to Nikon.

I think, there certainly is a future for APS-C, and it is proven by latest MFT cameras. Even if FF sensors will cost only 50 dollars more than APS-C, many customers will prefer less size and weight both for body and for lenses. At the moment, there is no FF alternative for such lenses as Canon 15-85 or Zeiss 16-80 or Sigma 17-70 — Nikon 24-120 and Canon 24-105 are significantly heavier, larger and more expensive. Either for 18-125/135/200/250/270 — no alternative in FF world.

And I fear we will never see full frame for $1000 because of permanent price increase. Each new model became a reason to a next step of price growth. 5D Mark II was announced with MSRP of $2700, and 5D Mark III with minor changes and developed four years later — with $3500 price tag.
I predict a $1,000 FF (barring massive inflation due to incessant QE) by 2016 Photokina.
