Size and Weight Comparison for the K-01 (Against K-5, K-r and K-x)

First, we have seen the life comparison by the DPR:-

Next, below are the factual data as it is summarised:-

Model
Width (mm)
Height (mm)
Depth (mm)
Weight Without Battery (g)
Weight With Battery (g)
K-01
122
79
58
480
561
K-5
131
97
73
670

68
515
598
K-x
122.5
91.5
67.5

580

To further visualise the dimension and size differences amongst K-5, K-r and K-x, the following quick pages can be followed:-

K-5 Vs K-r | K-5 Vs K-x | K-r Vs K-x

Well, after all, I just wonder, with the deletion of penta-prism or at least penta-mirror, the mirror and the finder, why the minimisation achievement is so less and minimal? >:-o

Update (2-3): Now the camerasize.com has updated and included the K-01 camera body, here it goes, e.g., against the size of a NEX-5N:-

Using K mount lenses dictates the depth of the camera (btw. I wish it had a bigger grip).

They might have gotten rid of the grip, but well, in terms of usability it wouldn't have been a good idea (however one could imagine a video camera that gets rid of the grip and replaces it with a more video camera like handle... something like an old Mamiya RB67 for example.

The height was reduced quite a bit, the hump where the flash is hidden could have been removed though, I'm sure they could have found some other place for the flash (especially as it already has a rather fancy mechanism). The camera looks like there is quite a bit of empty space. Maybe something like a flash that's mounted on an hinged arm, that looks like a segment of a circle, mounted to an arm which when folded down looks like a part of the top of the camera. That could place the flash somewhere where there is space while being a simple mechanism that won't break easily but still raises high above the camera. Hard to describe. Essentially it would be a design more akin to the X Pro1 (or whatever it is called) or the NEX series, with a flat top.

The camera should have plenty space for all sorts of things, since Sony can make the NEX series of camera which is much smaller, and the only thing keeping the K-01 big being the K-mount.
I don't know if the DPR image is on scale, specially the first one. On the picture the width of the K-01 seems the same as the K-5, while looking at the table it is surely smaller (even if by only 10mm).
the flange distance dictates the size in the lens mount part.
the lens mount part dictates the size of the whole box so as to keep a bit of harmony in there.
from a certain point of view, the nex is ugly as hell (with the lens on), but i don't see people complaining..

I think EVIL cameras MAY be the future but ONLY if they provide an adequate viewfinder so that the photographer can isolate the picture and/or take pictures in the glaring sun -you know how it is. The ideal EVIL, in my opinion, shold have an excellent viewfinder like that of the Sony alpha SLT's, or like that of the Fuji X100.
And I think that any modern camera, EVIL or DSLR, should have the LiveView screen put on hinges so as to enable shooting from the waist, which is the only advantage, in photographic terms, of a LiveView screen. The fact that the KR and K5 did not have flanged LiveView stopped me from updating from Kx, and the fact that the K01 does not have that either will continue to deter me -and I believe many others, from what I see.
And, while we are at it, I think any exchangeable lens system MUST allow you to customize the focus callibration individually for each lens. I hope the K01 does that. The Kx does not, alas.

Speaking to an audience of photography journalists in central London this lunchtime Newson admitted that the camera differs from others on the market.

He said it is targeted at people who have an interest in design.

In an accompanying video he added: 'I think consumers will be happy that they have been given a choice.'

Pentax added in a statement: 'The optical viewfinder and quick-return mirror were eliminated during the design process to allow more freedom in design of the camera body.

'The result is a camera that shows Marc Newson's originality in every detail.'

Newson added: 'I wanted to return to the high quality roots of the brand and create something which was really unique and iconic.'

It seems clear that Pentax is not targeting the mass market with this 'design-led' camera.

This should put in perspective that this camera is not "big"

I think if the new lenses are shorter (outside of the camera) then the bulkiness isn't that much of an issue. The NEX series is tiny... until you actually add a lens to it (except for their pancake). If the 18-55 XS is keeping the same distance to the sensor as in the NEX, thus keeping the overall size as small as possible, and they can communicate that, then I actually think it's a good idea. Certainly the fat grip should help in usability (it should have been a bit more pronounced though), and when the overall size with XS zoom lens is the same as with other ILCs I think we have a winner here. Better usability with the same small size.

thanks for this comparision. For me I'd want a smaller body if I was to buy it. Otherwise what's the advantage?
