Pentax? K-5/K-5II/K-5IIs "flagship"?? 3-year old technologies for both the body design and the sensor, against the up-to-date techs in 2013?! How Pentax could compete!? In fact, the mid-grade Canon is already more than enough to knock out the flagship "top-of-the-line" Pentax! Sad!! >:-(

You're much too harsh about Pentax, Rice. It's always the same with you: whenever Canikony brings out a new camera you're the first to state that Pentax will die. It's getting a bit long in the tooth.

IF Pentax dies, you Rice, are partly responsible. Allways telling that Pentax is not worth buing and that any sensible man should buy Canikon instead because they are in every sense much better. Ever thought about that people do read what you are writing and take it seriously. You´re the best publicity Canikon can get. And free.

And there it goes again, Canon/Nikon/Sony releases a new camera (and not a very interesting one, by the way) and you claim Pentax is dead, bla blab blah...
Seriously, you should calm down a little. I remember you once had a bit of a prespective view, and could see a bit more than that. And even if Pentax dies someday, I can assure you it won't be due to a mid-level cámera by Canon. I Can understand someomne complaining about the lack of new and interesting lenses by Pentax, and even the delay on the wished FF, but crying for the 70D? Meh...

Emotional talk again from Rice ("in the dark"). Amusing.
A little offtopic...I am happy to say that MX-1 got silver award on DPR..Also this equivalency with Olympus XZ-2 didn't stop Pentax to make a good camera...K-5ii/iis still got a Gold Award just being refurbished!

I always read about the great range of accessories for Canon. Surely Canon has more lenses available. Strangely, I do not see when I'm traveling. Most people I see running around with the standard zoom or a Tamron / Sigma, because the originals are too expensive.

For Pentax, there are some telephoto lenses, DA 200, DA300, Sigma 50-500. Who of you has as much money that he was a Nikon 300 2.8 or similar buys? So let's always stay on the ground.

And as for the new camera from Canon. We will see:

100% viewfinder?
Weatherproof?
Body made of plastic?

Well, this is the 2nd time I'd have to agree with Rice. The 70D is the Canon DSLR that will topple the K-5II off the top spot. This is different from the K-50 or K-500, where there's just enough differentiation between them and the 700D or D5200, that I wouldn't give up the Pentax brand. The 70D just has too many advantages that even if the K-5II's sensor still performs better those looking for more bang for your bucks simply wouldn't go for Pentax.

Rice has often been too harsh on Pentax, but this time they *almost* deserve it. If Pentax don't announce a killer Product in this price range by September, God help us all.
Pentax are not dead, but Ricoh are so far quite poor at leading the company. (ok let's be blunt they're awful and have no clue)
Whilst not RIP Pentax is becoming increasingly irrelevant in the market place.

They just re-cycle the same dated bodies with bug fixes (K-5II and K-30 fixed known AF problems)
K-50/500 nice enough but barely a whimper from forums or any real interest.
Be assured this Canon will sell like crazy esp for sports and wild life shooters
Pentax name deleted from the name of company! http://www.pentax.jp/english/news/2013/20130702.h...

tracking af: very cool; hope the k-5 successor has it (I believe the d7100 does and now it seems certain the 7d successor will too)
Okay Rice is correct for once - The camera itself is very impressive, and with the big breakthrough sensor technology Canon has just leapfrogged everyone for video focusing including Sony and Panasonic. It also is not sensitive to F stop so focusing at F8 or higher is no longer a problem. No more Back/Front focus issues too. It still has the 7D phase module for wicked fast action stills. What is not to like here? While this is a Pentax forum it is not just Pentax that should be concerned. The Nikon 7100 is suddenly looking not very competitive either. Watch for big discounts on the 7100. I suppose Nikon (as well as Pentax) could work a deal with Aptina to provide sensors with phase detect , but the technology is still not as good as Canon's and it will take time to implement. Oddly I think Nikon should be more concerned than Pentax/Ricoh as the Ricoh camera/imaging group is a tiny almost hobby like (boutique) group for Ricoh whereas Nikon relies mostly on cameras as it's primary business. This could be the turning point for many makers not just Pentax.
The AF of the Canon 70D it only works 0-20EV, compared to the K-5 II's -3 to 18.
The K-5 II can shoot in the dark, the 70D cannot. So the 70D does 'not leave the K-5II in the dark' at all. The reverse is the case.

RiceHigh used to bring relevant and constructive criticism to the camera world, and I think his criticism was good for Pentax. They had a good start with the Star-ist series and the K100 was a winner at the time. RiceHigh encouraged better low light performance, wider ISO range, higher sensor resolution, etc, etc. Pentax to their credit does pay attention to their loyal and well informed users. Rice took a LOT of heat from the Pentaxian world and continued offering valid commentary.

He finally had enough one day and seemingly turned on Pentax. I honestly don't think I could have stayed with it as long as he did, however I would more likely have gone silent rather than poking sticks at the Pentax world, but with a blog to fill I guess he has little choice.

RiceHigh, I hope you some day find your way back to the Pentax community - even anonymously. There are some good offerings here and the fight isn't over yet. Pentax still listens.

How can you say that PENTAX is dead.... The 70D can't even match a 3 year old design much less beat it, However the 70d has way more video capability..

Amazon Canon EOS 70D Digital SLR Camera with 18-135mm STM Lens by Canon - $1,349.00 (the only canon lenses that are weather resistant are L lenses and a few other odd lenses )
