Let me be the first to say it - WTF ? Why drop a name with such tradition and recognition for a name that hardly anyone associates with cameras (at least in North America) ?

Perhaps the RICOH name is better known for cameras elsewhere ?

Someone please enlighten me on how this is a beneficial change because I don't see any advantages at all.

Because it should be politically correct. Ricoh is the master, everything else is not important.
Change of Company Name!!!
Both PENTAX and RICOH products will remain in the market!!!

Next time they can delete the Pentax logo from the cameras and lenses. How difficult will it be?

Next time they can not only delete the Pentax logo from the cameras and lenses but can delete the Pentax concept in photography.
All goes to that. Unfortunately.
OK - after re-reading the announcement, I guess they are keeping the logo for now.

It is interesting how they mention Pentax for technology and Ricoh for brand recognition. This may forshadow the dropping of the Pentax logo altogether. I hope this is not the case.

Let's look at the history:
1. Ricoh bought the Pentax from the Hoya.
2. Ricoh started new joint company "Pentax Ricoh Imaging Co" putting the Pentax name first not only by the alphabetical reason but declaring the partnership. IMHO
3. Only a couple years later Ricoh deleted the name of Pentax from the name of company. And that is done not only in alphabetical reason ;) but to show new partnership strategy: former Pentax should know who is master and owner, who is investor. IMHO

What will happen next and how soon? Let's make a forecast and wait. ;)

Remembering the words of the famous song: "No Pentax - no cry." ;)
lol, "no pentax - no cry"... now that's a good song :)
Either I am naive, or this is just the corporation name change, not the branding. If you look at the bottom of your camera from three years ago, do you know what company put out your Pentax camera? Hoya Corporation. This is not that big of deal.
News Corp just split, the news organization kept the News Corp name, while the media side (Fox, FX, 20th Century Fox, etc) went with 21st Century Fox.
Apple went from Apple Computer to Apple Inc. a few years ago. People made jokes about how they were not making computers anymore.
Look at who the corporations are that make Panasonic cameras, or who owns Taco Bell and KFC.
nothing to see here

Datsun changed its name in the 70s, they are still there.
I would be sorry to see the Pentax brand go. But I would be more interested in seeing a flagship body that is compatible with my lenses and can compete with Canikon - whatever the label is on it!

Old anecdote about changing of the name:
During the first month after the "Bacon Society" was organised and announced, it's office received thousands letters with the claims of the quality of bacon.
Been surprised and annoyed of that fact, the office of the Bacon Society made a great decision and changed the name to "Francis Bacon Society".
The day after the name was changed, the office of the Society received next angry letter: "Instead of changing the name - it is better to monitor the quality of the bacon!"

Let's associate it on the current moment... ;)

P.S. The Francis Bacon Society is the real and respected organization.
Without any jokes. ;) http://www.francisbaconsociety.co.uk/the-society/

In another display of Ricoh intelligance they are offering the K-5iii in Mauve (because it's a fugitive color) as the only change, to attract criminals.
What is the real fuss? Same was for ages under Asahi Optical, who owned Pentax product brand name. Same was under Hoya. Now under Ricoh.
Pentax was almost always a *product brand name*. There was only a short period when Pentax name was established a company, in early 2000s, which marks the period of poorest brand management anyway.
Most people reading this blog never owned a Pentax made product, but by Asahi, Hoya or Ricoh.

"Same was for ages under Asahi Optical, who owned Pentax product brand name. Same was under Hoya. Now under Ricoh." (С)

You are right while looking backward in the history. Ricoh at the startup of his project made something different.
When Ricoh put the Pentax name into the name of united company - it seemed to be a one step forward, but deleting the name of Pentax from the name of united company after about three years of joint work - seems to be a one step backward. Not enough to be upset? ;)
OK, let's be optimistic: no Pentax - no cry.
From Imaging Resource:

"And, in fact, the Pentax name has been "just" a brand for most of its life, so in some ways this is a return the status quo. Here's a breakdown of how the Pentax name has been used over the years.

Pre-1954, Pentax was a brand name of VEB Zeiss Ikon. (The name was formed as a contraction of "pentaprism", and Zeiss Ikon's Contax brand).

From 1954 until 2002, Pentax became a brand of Asahi Optical, after the latter purchased the name.

From 2002 to 2007, Pentax was adopted as the company name for the first time in its history.

From 2007 to 2011, Pentax returned to brand status under new owner Hoya.

In 2011, it became a company in its own right again, but only briefly, before becoming Pentax Ricoh Imaging.

Today's Pentax Ricoh announcement comes on the heels of some other photography branding news. Just last week, famed optics manufacturer Carl Zeiss AG announced it would be removing "Carl" from its brand and become, simply, Zeiss, going forward.

As the French might say: "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose."

Agree. Pentax is just a brand name.
I guess a new "innovative" product will be annonced in August 2013 using the new company name.
What "innovative" product are you expected to see?! Two years+ has elapsed, we've got only a K-5II as the "serious" "flagship" product!

Yes! New "innovative" product announced yet: http://www.pentax.jp/japan/news/2013/20130704.htm...
;)
This is the beginning of the end of Pentax. The name Pentax will disappear. So long, Pentax.

Sure you can mount Pentax lenses on new Ricoh cameras after Pentax cameras disappear, probably using an adapter. Pentax lenses will be like Minolta lenses, I guess.

This is it. The end of Pentax.
I suppose the question is not whether "Pentax" is a brand or company, but who is working in the Ricoh camera department. Are the same people who deisnged the K-5 still working for Ricoh and does Ricoh have an interest in using the existing "Pentax" products (e.g., K-5 and K mount lenses) in developing new products.
No Problem, Ricoh makes Pentax cameras. Somebody has to.
