Shootout of the Five APS-C DCs: X100s Vs X2 Vs Coolpix A Vs GR Vs DP1M (Portraiture and Scenery Tests)

I think the test pictures speak themselves and the differences in results are obvious. There is simple footnote for the camera in use with shooting information under each sample picture.

My overall impression is that for skin tone reproduction: Fuji is better than Leica > Nikon > Ricoh > Sigma. Well, it seems that the camera order in the review has already hinted us something!

As for the other IQ aspects of these cameras, just go figure out yourself! :-)

You know, comparing the output of JPEG engines doesn't say a whole lot about a camera's capabilities and performance. Just sayin.

It is told that all the images are RAW converted with original softwares.
I missed that. The google translation was pretty awful. It was giving me a headache to read. If that's the case this is slightly more interesting, but they need to do like dpreview and just use lightroom. Oh wait, the sigma isn't supported in lightroom. So there goes that. I think the output of the GR looks the most neutral if you ask me. Whether that is good or bad is a matter of taste.
PS: dpreview gave the GR-D the gold and the Nikon the silver. Kind of unexpected. I certainly think the GR has the better lens out of the two, and that's probably what matters the most to me. The two use pretty much the same sensor. All the differences are in the processing engines.
Hard to say....I like Sigma, Nikon and Ricoh too...
Original software is not the best software.
Ricoh is the sharpest

But Sigma is the most impressive. No Moire problems whatsoever. Their Foveon sensor is amazing.
until you need to use something other than base ISO. but every camera has its purpose I guess.
Color-wise the best one is the Leica X2 while for details and sharpness the best is the Sigma by a large margin (quite impressive indeed). The Sigma fares the worse in terms of color, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were simply a matter of white balance.
More dumb tests that mean nothing. Each camera has a better IQ even in ToyLens filter mode than the tester in the normal mode.
But what about this ranking:
– X100s and X2 are best if you like to show that you intend to take photos in a while.
– Coolpix A and GR are best if you like to take photos now, and go.
– Sigma is best if you like to take photos now, but not go anywhere for a while.

I don't know how you conclude that. I think I can take any camera anywhere anytime to take photos, though if I know I would be taking more portraits, the 35mm equiv. will be my first choices. They are all unique in their own rights, none are truly "better," and I would love to own all of them if I have the money. If I'd have to buy one tomorrow, definitely Ricoh is the one; primarily because of the value for money, but also because I'd need the better grip.
I think it was more than slightly tongue in cheek, but I agree 100% with what you say. The analogy to the sigma cameras made me laugh because you are almost forced to use as near to iso 100 as possible to maximize IQ. All of these cameras have strengths and weaknesses. Even the "toy" Q system has its own virtues. Personally I would go with the GR-D myself because I think the lens is great and it features a much more intuitive UI than the Coolpix. I do like the Fuji cameras. I'm not really convinced that x-trans is superior though when it comes to resolution and noise. I'm ok lugging around my rather small DSLR around, but the 5-6 lens kit I carry these days is certainly not convenient like a Q with a 06 Zoom would be. If they made the gr-d around 42mm equivalent I would be really interested. That's a really great street focal length and is better than 50mm IMO. 28mm is a little wide unless your style is fairly up close and personal. If someone could make a 24-70 equivalent zoom at even f4 and fit that into a compact body it would sell really well. Even if you have to go down to m4/3 to get the lens smaller. That's pretty much what canon did with the G1 X, except with a variable aperture lens.

It is tongue in cheek. Missed the little smiley, or perhaps ignored it. I just want to write something :

Regarding what camera to lug around everyday, I already has the answer to that. Definitely the Nokia 1020! 1/1.5" sensor (or 1/1.2", reports differ) coupled with a nice f/2 lens (i dunno what FL, 28mm perhaps) and an advanced phone OS (I'd rather have Android, but WP 8 is good enough if it has that camera) is something i have been waiting for for a long time. I'd tried toe bring a compact cam and a phone, and I just can't get used to it even if it isn't very incovenient. As soon as it arrive near me, I'd snatch one and won't look back.
thanks for the info...
hmm... IMO... Sigma DP1 is not the camera for bokeh, portraiture and skin tones... it's amazing camera for landscape shooting from ISO 100 - 400. If this cameras will be compared with Sigma DP3 Merill the result will be DIFFERENT from the recent... (btw - see the http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras... ). I'm the owner of DP1M - DP2M - DP3M...
