When Did Pentax Forget about a Compact DSLR Body?!

First look at my old *ist DL2:

Do note that the above is already loaded with batteries and memory card and is ready to shoot.

And then a K-5 with the same compact DA pancake lens of mine, also loaded and ready:

In fact, the K-5 body alone is just heavier than the DL2 with the 21mm pancake lens! :-(

Yet I bet Pentax fanboys will again defend that the K-5 is not a low-end body and thus it should be larger and heavier. But let's compare further the following:

1. K-5IIs Vs Canon 6D Full Frame:

http://camerasize.com/compare/#373,380

Well, it is measured that "Pentax K-5 IIs [760 g] weights 1% (10 grams) less than Canon EOS 6D [770 g] (*inc. batteries and memory card)."! I can't believe that a FF body is lower end than the cropped APS-C K-5 by all means! And also:

2. K-50 Vs K-5:

http://camerasize.com/compare/#462,372

The K-50 also weighs 650g loaded and ready, which is just 20g lighter than my *ist DL2 with the DA21 pancake lens mounted with the metal lens hood attached as shown above! For what I have also measured, the lens hood weighs 12g. So, the weight of the K-50 body alone is just about equal to that of the DL2 together with the DA21 lens without the lens hood!

After all, I think Ricoh has completely lost direction for what to make and market and the brains of their heads were and are yet non-functioning, completely! When the new entry level cameras created by them is so big and heavy, what's the point? Have they also forgot about their really compact and lightweight line of the DA pancake lenses? Do they still really want to sell more of these?! >:-(

At the end of the day, I bet over 90% of the potential entry-level DSLR buyers would want a compact plus lightweight body like the Canon's EOS100D rather than a bulky and heavy K-50/K-500 with a so-marketed 100% coverage viewfinder, which they really don't care much about or just even don't know what it is! :-o

Agree with you on this one. The k-x and k-r were the last truly light Pentax DSLR. I'm still hoping Pentax would release an upgrade to the k-r, either make it even lighter or add features without adding weight.

Personally I don't have any problem with size and weight of the modern Pentax DSLR - they are enough comfortable. I have some minor problems with the size of the sensor in them. ;) But this problem is so old, traditional and seems to be unsolvable so usually I forget this problem while shooting.
If one need more lightweight and small camera with intergangeable lens - why don't take a look at Olympus cameras, Fuji, Samsung etc.?
Pentax is a Pentax as it is. ;)

Comparison between K-5, which is a metal alloy body (not only chassis), and 6D, *ist, k-r, k-50, etc. which are all plastic wonders, is just plain stupid..

Because the k5 is not made of plastic. If pentax released the MZD now, the digital form of MZS it would have a full frame sensor and Cost over $3000 i hope it would be built better than a camera that cost around $1000. I never shot jpeg because losses image data every time you edit it or copy it.

Although I probably would not consider myself a fan of your blog, I do visit it regularly to check for updates. I find the information on your blog (with the sentimental attachment to Pentax and the related reactions separated from the facts) often helpful and useful to me.
As for this particular post of yours, I start to feel that you are running out of items about Pentax to rant. It could mean that there aren't enough new things in the land of Pentax to rant about. So please Pentax.....
What about other difference in the components that could contribute to the weight difference? I don't know if the DL2 has a prism or not, but compared with the K-r and K-x which has pentamirrors, shouldn't the pentaprism be heavier?

Personally I sometimes shoot with an external flash mounted even if I'm not using it just to add heft, which contributes to stability, at least in my case.

Don't forget about sensor stabilization which needs some extra weight.
Rice, How many pentax digital camera bodies do you have ?

EOS 6D - no built-in flash, no stabilization, design 'youngest' few years. And it is still heavier...
I don't know why are you discussing MZS? Pentax MZS came very late and in this sense is connected with the sad times for Pentax. Yes, good camera, but late. The film era was closed. Pentax made a great mistake with the Philips sensor. And I think Pentax lost pace. Up to now. Good FF will cost so much that would get Pentax in financial troubles. Again. And I guess that they know it well. No FF lenses in the current list and in this case even good FF body will not sell well.
Rice is too small and too weak that he can feel 100 grams difference...:)

Nothing about new eos1, 75 MP and 47 MP ? :)
Don't forget that we all like larger, higher res rear screens. That real estate in turn needs larger batteries. Both mean more weight.

Also to compare the pro grade magnesium body and water proofing of a K-5 with lower- end dLSRs is not an apples to apples comparison. WR and mag bodies are not a free lunch weight-wise. Nor is more shots/charge. I've picked up the lower end Canon bodies - feel very flimsy vs even my K-x.

Let's not get too hung up with a few grams here and here.
Compared to the actual competition... 60D/70D, 7D and D7100, I do think the K-5 is on the small and light side of things. It IS a bit heavy, yes, but it not as heavy and nowhere near as bulky as those other cameras. The K-5 is still acceptable... just.
