FF Officially Confirmed! Latest Interview with the Head of Pentax Ricoh China at the Chinese P&E 2013

(Left: Mr. Tomoyoshi Shibata, the Managing Director and General Manager of Pentax Ricoh China (Shanghai) Company; Right: Pentax Ricoh at P&E 2013, Beijing, China.)

Read this interview, in Chinese:-

http://www.pcpop.com/doc/0/900/900149.shtml

The key points of what are told by the MD are as follows:-

1. The sales of the MX-1 has been quite good.

2. The sales of the K-01 is actually very good. It is a case that the demand is more than supply. (Oh really? :-o)

3. A professional class APS-C *Pentax* camera is being planned.

4. Pentax will continue to develop new pancake lenses and will develop and evolve the K-mount so as to meet the market needs. (The Head was asked about the latest development of the Pentax *mirrorless* system and this is his answer.)

5. A Pentax FF camera is under development. It will be a type that is different from all the others'.

6. The Pentax 645D is not threated by the Nikon D800/E which is considered to be a camera not targeted clearly for a specific market segment than what the 645D has been. (Replacement of the ageing 645D is not mentioned.)

In contrast, in the last year's interview with the same guy in the P&E 2012 (in Chinese), the Head actually refused to confirm the development and existence of a Pentax 135 FF (what he told was only "studying", but this year it is completely different! :-D

Last but not least, below are some photos of the exhibition. It seems the PR booth is not as popular and crowded as the other brands':-

Hip Hip !!!
"It seems the PR booth is not as popular and crowded as the other brands':-"

When Nikon is more times bigger in money than Pentax and invest in agressive marketing, schools and stuff is no wonder that the booth will be crowded..Pentax had a rough times in the last years under Hoya. Was sold again to Ricoh ...With Nikon i don't see this kind of stuff...
it can only be different than the others if it is mirrorless with interchangeable lenses... so we can forget fast autofocus :-P

It will be different from all the others ..  Pentax 135 format cameras. Which is quite true, for all Pentax full frame cameras were film cameras. If this one they are developing is digital FF, there you go. Very optimistic  news!
I hope different will not mean it is available in 256 different color combinations... *lol*
But, Pentax had always put some really innovative features into their models in terms of usability. The always had some clever solutions, and they put more features into a single body than canon or nikon cause they only had a few models in the market, and canon/nikon always have several models on the market, whit each of them having one key feature but missing some others. Pentax put all their features into one body.

But i am sure it will not be a professional model - because for a pro-dslr system it is not only the body, the accessories and the lenses you need, its a whole infrastructure of on-site service and support at specific events.

A K-5 Feature Pack with a FF Sensor would be great !!! And the body can have bigger size, no matter for me.

BTW: Did he say something about FF Lens development?

They are liars. Prices don't drop drastically when demand is high. Why stop the production if it demand is high?

And of course the booth is not crowded. Pentax didn't release anything else than some watches lately.

LOL, still promising. "Under development" - thanks God now I'm fine! =) I still have one FF lens that I can't sell... BTW, Pentax Russia fired the main managers of marketing department. Funny but they are exactly those people who promised FF at Russian "FotoForum" 2012 - Anton Melnikov and Maria Lenkina

The k01 is now selling, I am not supprised the price has fallen lower than some compacts in the U.K, The FF is different !!!! maybe its based on the 645, Think about it a 645 body with a 36 x 24 chip and k mount ???????.
Regards Snappertim
The statement that the FF will be "different from all the others" worries me a bit. This has been the approach of Pentax for quite some products now, K-01 and Q, and it doesn't seem to have been all too successful..
I think the seemingly brilliant customisation abilities and menus of Ricoh could be just enough coupled with ex. the special FA Limited lenses that possess some of that retro sexyness that is selling Fuji-cameras like crazy.
"different from all the others" ... A mirrorless FF system camera?

pentax q 10 is selling quite well
Different from all the others?
Hmmm...
Maybe:
- A FF DSLR with interchangeable camera module?
- A FF DSLR with interchangeable viewfinder just like the classic Pentax LX?
- A scaled-down 645D?
- A retro design FF?
???

camera is that capable of shooting different formats eg 1:1 3:2 4:3 2:1 fitting the ff circle
Pentax has mentioned they are working on a Full Frame a few times.
Have they ever once said that it would use the K-mount? Serious question.

I have a K-5lls & K-5, I don't see a way of making them much more professional (unless you go FF and/or built-in vertical grip) but if the interpretation is verbatim it's still not written in stone. Don't see improved video capture as a big improvement, but I still haven't taken any videos, on the other hand USB-3 is long over-due on all cameras. I canceled the 35mm Sigma I back-ordered in November (for use with FF) hopefully Tokina will make bright Full Frame Weather Resistant lenses with SDM auto-focus in 35mm as well as 24mm & 85mm of similar quality, I just don't need any more lenses if I don't have a FF DSLR.

>> I can now say that Pentax full-frame SLR camera has been in research and development, and is a distinctive full frame.<<

He says it will be a __distinctive__ camera. I interpret this as a camera that will be noticed in the FF world, not something odd, like 'mirrorless' or whatever people come up with in this forum.

A mirrorless fullframe without a viewfinder or manual controls!
Just kidding!
Oh please who is this bad PR dude who denies reality?

D800E has killed (stone dead) the 645D a quick look on amazon and it's range 500.000 in best sellers electronics ;-) Cough
Has anyone seen one? D800 KO'd the 645D long ago gum shield on the floor out for the count and he knows it too

A FF camera that is different? Ok different how? What free Angry Birds app built in lol. (Don't get me wrong I welcome any FF camera I just don't see how they'll be doing something unique not to mention a lack of FF lenses to use on it) K-3 was evidently going to be released a month ago on the rumour sites

K-01 sold well and they couldn't make enough of them! Right so that explains why it's on blow out sale for £300 with a pancake lens and there are no current plans to make another one.

I simply don't believe a word this guy says
