Yet Another MX-1 Full Review, with Full Size ISO Samples

http://digiphoto.techbang.com/posts/4630-pentax-mx-1-evaluation-renewal-of-classic-retro-wen-qing-is-worth-losing-it?page=2

(in Chinese, Google machine-translated page here.)

A full ISO comparison with full test samples are posted. The reviewer says that the IQ is not good enough starting from ISO800 with the significant loss of details and the appearance of more noise, which is considered not acceptable. It is further concluded that the usable ISO range is of ISO 400 and below. Judging from the samples, I am afraid that the Q actually performs better, frankly.

In fact, I think this review is quite fair and objective. The MX-1 is too large, thick and heavy to handle, especially for a P&S camera. So the user-friendliness of it is just so-so. But then the IQ of it is just average, also.

Last but not least, it is confirmed that full optical zooming is not supported during video recording of Full HD movies.

Ricehigh,

I have had the chance to test a new out of the box MX-1 and I am currently writing the review.
I don't agree with some of your opinions but there is a fact that has no discussion: optical zoom CAN be used during video recording.

I first thought that it could not, but then i found that it MUST be activated in the menu since, from factory, the option is not marked.
I am surprised that a tester says the contrary and also that you, a experienced internet user, have not confirmed it by yourself before writing what you wrote.

For instance, the very complete Pentaxforums MX-1 test, in the menu chapter says:
"You can make full use of the MX-1's zoom during recording, but the lens motor can clearly be heard in the resulting video file, as demonstrated in the sample clip below:"
And the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ6LvhgDFRY

Also, page 120 of the user guide states that you can use optical zoom during video recording and how to enable it.

So -1 for you this time, Ricehigh for not doing your homework.
;-)

The Samsung EX-2 is 24-80mm f/1.4-2.7, has a hot shoe, cost less and is on sale.
naah.. the MX-1 is wonderful. I've taken 2000 photos in a month! more than I ever did with my D70, D200, D300 or D7000! I enjoy A LOT using the MX-1.

Yes, it's not a small camera that can fit in my jeans or jacket pocket but the camera is very very good at taking pictures. It's lens is fast and the colors are more than correct.

I don't miss the viewfinder but what I miss is the possibility to put a UV filter to reduce the blue cast in sunny days. Other than that, the camera is 10 points for me.

The blue cast is caused by the blue/purple tendency of the Auto WB of all the recent Pentax cameras, K-01 and K-5II inclusive, nothing is related to the UV.
There is a solution for using filters on MX-1 (and other compacts without a filter thread): http://www.carryspeed.com/products/magfilter-thre...
Thanks for the reply RiceHigh! So it's not the UV... when I take photos of people wearing white clothes in sunny days, all the scene is dominated by that blue cast. I hope Pentax releases a firmware to correct this, but if the problem is known with the other camera models and nothing has been done yet, then I will have to adjust the color manually. Regards.

You are welcome. My last observation may worth only two cents! :-)
