A More Realistic Approach to Tackle with the Finderless/Pentaxless Trend of Pentax!

Since the Q and now the K-01, it seems that the Finderless and Pentaxless direction of Pentax is clear and could not be stopped! >:-o ;-D

So, what can those Pentax users do, if they still want to invest in those new bodies? Well, first see this DIY cheap solution!

A somewhat detailed discussion thread can also be found here at the PF:-

http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-q-forum/171113-make-your-own-optical-viewfinder.html

So, this is an end product for what a Q user successfully made:-

Do note that the finder must be matched in the Angle/Field of View (AoV/FoV) with the lens in use for its effective focal.

Well, there are other choices off the shelves, amongst them are designed and built for different AoV, I tabulate a quick summary of those which are currently on the market:-

Make/Model
Effective AoV in 135 Equivalent
Estimated Cost (US$)
Ricoh GV-1 for GRD21mm (w/ 28mm Frame)$259
Samsung Hotshoe-mount* EA-OVF1 for EX1
*Widely Reported to be Larger in Size than Standard, Samsung is Really Funny!
24mm
$112
Panasonic DMW-VF1 for LX3/5
24mm
$174
Sigma VF-11 for DP1/S/X
28mm
$172
Nikon NH-VF2828mm
$135
Ricoh GV-2 for GRD3/428mm
$259
Olympus VF-1
34mm
$195
Leica OVF for X1
36mm
$427
Fotoman Zoom Finders for Medium Formats (Two Models)39-100mm / 60-140mm
$75
Pentax O-VF1
47mm
$246

Okay, my research would better end here. Nonetheless, even if the Pentax Q/K-01 users buy all of the above, has the problem been resolved completely? :-o If anyone still finds that the above are just too expensive and/or useless, they could also consider this:-

Simple Solution to the Lack of Viewfinder of the K-01!

Whilst it is really cheap enough, the image coverage will be lowered with the use of the this accessory as the LCD display image is magnified and a bulky thing is added, too!

At the end of the day, I am asking again: WHY all these troubles?!! >:-{

How many people that buy the new pentax bodies will actually bother with modifying the camera to acomodate an optical viewfinder..Many people do not update the firmware...The enthuaziast market will jump ship and buy a camera from other manufacture just to have an OVF out of box or will go for K-5

Yes, that's right! Thats why Pentax even didn't bother to test the K-01 with an old FA* lens neither and so here comes the obvious problem:-

Rice, if you have to point out from K-01 or maybe mirrorless system in general,
what is the most selling point of this system ?

I read in the Techradar, Nikon 1 J1 (without EVF) sells better than its V1 ! The price surely different, but... its proven even without EVF, J1 is more successful.

Nikon surely smarter than Pentax to provide two models with and without EVF to see where the trend flows.

For most of the time, I use my NEX-3 as my lightweight and compact alternative to my Pentax DSLR system. The NEX-3 does not support an EVF neither (which is a problem under bright situations).

However, the K-01 is almost as large and as heavy as my K-x, I simply can't find a single reason for why I should use it over my K-x. If the K-x is to be updated with the K-01 sensor with those new functions, I think many people would still find it meaningful for such a new entry level K-mount body from Pentax, but not now the K-01, which has no clear advantages of neither a mirrorless nor a DSLR!
The other day I was at the wedding of a friend of my office. I don't like to be the "official" photographer of my friend's weddings (and miss all the fun?!), but I carry my pentax and some lenses to take my own pictures (and share with my friends later). Back to the point, there where at least 3 other slr cameras (canons) taking photos, friends of the family, I don't know who they where. The 100% of all the other cameras where using the lcd screen to compose, autofocus, review. So I think every person new to photography, or just updating to a slr from a p&s, are so used to do all in the lcd that they simply don't care about the viewfinder. We old school couldn't live with an optical, or use the camera close to the face, just for the habit to put the elbows tight to the body to eliminate camera shake. Even one girl was taking photos with the camera at arms lenght! in dim light! I don't want to know how they came out :P
So, I think this cameras are perfect for beginners. One day, they'll just upgrade to a slr, when thay found out what is an F number, iso number, that there are other lenses than zooms and that there is a difference between 5 and 9 aperture blades. I started with a Me Super and a 50, so there's no turning back for me :( ;)

The DIY finder looks very nice!

Whenever I shot wedding, I used my Canon gear. I believe that Pentax is not for that type of photography, especially when things are getting hurry and the lighting conditions are difficult.
