New 5D3 Release Suspends My Pentax Purchasing Plans

Planned to buy an external flash for my K-5 as well as the DA15 and DA17-70 lenses but yet have been hesitating about their performance and accuracy. But now since the 5D3 really comes, I have decided to withhold all my Pentax purchasing plans as fund is always inadequate! :-( In fact, I would rather buy the new Canon 600EX flash which is cheaper than a Pentax 540 flash locally (assuming that it is priced near the current 580EX cost). The 360 and 540 flashes as well as the Metz P-TTL alternatives have been found to be rather inaccurate and unpredictable when any of these is used on the K-5 as widely reported and as re-confirmed hands-on by myself, for more than once actually. And, I think I do not really need to buy the DA17-70 as I already had my EF24-105L lens which is optically better throughout the whole range and is quite sharp wide opened and it is a true 24mm wide in AoV but not much heavier. Maybe soon I would return to concentrate to play in the Canon FF land again as I still don't think APS-C is as good as FF in IQ, no matter how, and after I've been using my K-5 for some time now.

Possibly not, a RH's Canon Blog will have no one to visit! ;-)

That's affirmative.. :o) DA15 is a gem, DA17-70 OK, surprised you like the EF24 end bad barrel distortion...
The barrel distortion of the EF24-105L is huge at 24, but the distortion lens correction of the Canon bodies is *instantaneous*, in contrast to the super sluggish processing of all those Pentax cameras. So, it is just a non-issue here.

Glad you enjoy it. Hinted Pentax FF in 2013 might be a fun too..
The DA15 is overrated piece of glass, that is just good enough, nothing more.
The problem of this glass is that it is only optically sharp at f/8 but is expensive.

(overrated DA15) Conclusion based on what? Reading Inet blogs? If you own a good copy as I do, it would "live" on your K-5 a lot. Small and versatile gem with nice micro-contrast. I do remember RH getting a bad copy, but there are also some good too...
I had it. Nice lens but nothing spectacular. Better than other pentax DA WAs, but they are all shitty, so nothing special, again.
I have to say that I lust after something like the Nikon CLS or Canon Speedlights. On the other hand, I am very happy using the all manual Yonguno YN560 with Cactus V5s and a Sekonic 358. For the cost of just one iTTL/eTTL strobe I have a multi strobe setup that can light just about anything.
DA 17-70 is a very good standard zoom, if you get a good copy. Basically decently sharp at any length wide open onwards, although mine is softer in the corners at 17mm wide open, sharp across the frame at 70mm F4 (a bit different from photozone's test results). Focusing on lower contrast subjects from 50 to 70 can get very slow, but otherwise focusing is fine. No focusing adjustments for my K20 and so far no SDM issue either. Good close focusing - can't remember the stats, but okay for macro. You might consider saving up for the 16-50 replacement instead and meanwhile soldier on with the 16-45. That way you can pour vast sums of money into your Canon FF kit. :)
I am wondering about the discussion and also the "comparsion" of a K-5 to 5D Mark III. Of course 5d would be better in quality. but you will pay more than double the price...Its like comparing a vw golf to a mercedes benz....and complaining about the "failures" or malfunctions of the vw golf...You cannot expect from a golf with a 100 ps to have the same "power" and quality of mercedes c250 with 220 ps....
As a VW golf is a solid car, so is the pentax k-5...better than 400 € cameras but of course worse than 3000€ cameras...
